DREADED CHECK TRANSMISSION, GO TO DEALER

So I got dreaded Check Transmission, go to dealer light on my 2009 GTS F1.
As we have checked with my indie, the fault is on Gearbox Position Sensor (part number 248095).
It is not completely clear, if the sensors are really faulty, or there is maybe a fault on CAN line, as there are some other faults also, when connected to scanner.
We have checked the connections and cable and all looks good.
When the fault is cleared car drives for about 100 km without any problems, than transmission light comes back. Interesting thing is, that during driv,e light comes on and off and when off everything works perfectly, when on you can't change gears to higher gear.

So we think that first thing to try would be a mentioned gerabox position sensor.
So I'm asking if somebody know for a good used one or somebody maybe have it and would sell it for some normal price.
New one is crazy expensive, if we look that there are just 2 potentiometers with some cable.

If I were you I would install a new one. The reason is that the system is complicated and if the error persists following the swap I wouldn't be sure whether there is a problem with the second hand part or actually the issue was somewhere else all along.

For my penny’s worth, if it was a canbus issue it would more likely do it all the time rather than after a period of operation.

Try the Ferrari part of the same number, it might be cheaper, bafflingly.

What were the other faults ? As you say it could also be a fault on the canbus line along with other potential causes.

If the other faults that show pass through the same module for example then it could be the module has an intermittent fault thats causing the codes.

Was thinking the same, but tried to save some costs.
As I can see there is almost no option for used one, or price is near the new one, so probably finnaly I'll go with new one.

My thinking also about canbus, but not really 100% sure.
Ferrari part is about the same, as I have seen untill now.

Everytime when i get trenasmisson ligh, I also get PARK OFF error - but I think that parking brake gets signal from tranny when to engage or disengage, so I would think this is connected with tranny fault.
After some time I also get check engine, but it saies that signa for check engine comes from transmission.

I also found all of this + some other options. As I can see untill now used one will not be an option, as I found none, so I'm already in contact with Eurospares and Scuderia.
The only thing which bothers me, and I have to check is if I have to pay customs for goods from GB.

However it's really interesting that here Ferrai part is chepaer then Maser, as usually is quite the oposite :).

Interesting, and the following is simply an observation from my own experience and not based on anything substantial;

I had the same fault - although I know my clutch is right near the end of it's life - but I was getting regular (say every 50-100 miles) Transmission Error - Go to Dealer etc. I also had a rear PDC failure (the two correlated around the same time). I then fixed the PDC by fitting a new sensor etc. The PDC error was fixed. The Transmission error cleared itself and ever since I have not had it return. Coming from an electronics & SW background (but also appreciate mechnics etc) I could explain it as either a CANBUS noise event and/or worn clutch characteristics. I think (as Matt @ Sportitalia said), time will tell.

One thing to add - I thought the only way to clear the transmission code was with an OBD tool. Battery resets etc have not had an effect. When the PDC fault cleared, the transmission fault cleared...

my QP had diagnosis with proper kit and we needed the position sensors for gearchange.
less than a week later gear all gear selection stopped, car failed to proceed. Failed F1 pump.
My symptoms, occasional failure to change gear when selected. Random drop to neutral a few times. My clutch was well worn when I bought the car and measured 86% worn when the fault was fixed. Been driving well for five years and 20k+ miles since.

The Transmission Control Unit (TCU) is not usually reset via cheap OBD tool or battery reset.
Who is your indie and do they use a proper diagnostic tool that can interrogate the TCU?

I hope it will not also be the F1 pump at mine, let's wait and see.

My indie has worked on official Ferrari/Maserati service before, now he's on his own, so I know he is competent and knows this cars very well.
He works on Ferraris and Maseratis all the time.
However he doesn't have SD3 tool, but some other, but I don't know exactly which.
Unfortunately we don't have an official service or dealer anymore in Slovenia, and he is the only indie that knows about this cars.

Just a short reply...ordered new sensors at Scuderia as they gave the best price.
Will post when sensors installed; I hope faulte will be solved.

My transmission issue which sent me on a wild goose chase ended up coming back as a failing wheel bearing. Loss or incorrect speed rotation signal from a sensor throws the gearbox and I turn clutch into panic.

Occasional transmission go to dealer errors that cleared on restart. Dropping out of gear on high gear changes (5/6) then not being able to select any gear.

None of the usual ABS/ASR/Traction lights till it finally went about a year later.

This was prior to my Sportsitalia days and another indie looked at my “gears with opposite shift” error and diagnosed the gearbox pots which turned out to be a red herring.

What I now do with anything gearbox related is connect diagnostics with live wheel speed sensor data, drive the car in a straight line and watch for one corner being behind or infront to the other three.

I also do this test with any car throwing wheel bearing ABS issues as we’ve been down this route before in changing the wrong bearing as SCAF will testify too.

Also a point to note, Maserati invert their wheel speed sensor codes left to right. What this means is that a generic code reader will say it’s front right when it’s actually front left and vice versa for the rear. Something to watch out for that has caught us out.

To confirm the corner from my tests above bearing in mind generic code readers inverted results, as a final check, on a ramp with the live wheel speed sensor data stream, spin the suspected corner and confirm it’s the correct side on diagnostics.

Are you buying the spares or your mechanic? Electrical items often unable to return so might be an expensive punt. No disrespect to any technician but the diagnostics are objectively not 100% correct.
My own issue was "most likely" gear change sensors. The respected specialist did inform me "we don't really do modern ones". With 20 / 20 hindsight I would go to a shop that sees many similar cars. Often the experienced technician will add sights, sounds and smells to the diagnostics.
The F1 style gear change needs to be treated as one ecosystem. Just opening the door starts a cycle of pump priming which can help determine system health by timing the gaps between pump running. Who knew!
