So one of the strange things about the above is how ebay has contributed to this.Overview of burglary and other household theft - Office for National Statistics
Long-term trends in burglary and other household theft, including demographic and nature of crime data.www.ons.gov.uk
"In the survey year ending March 2017, around 2 in 100 households had been victims of domestic burglary; this compares with around 9 in 100 households in the year ending December 1995, meaning that households are currently four times less likely to be a victim of burglary than in 1995."

'Second' hand items are sold legally on there which has impacted in the market for stolen items. Yes of course some stolen items end up on there, but the days of buying a DVD player in a pub are over... this and how cheap electronic items are and that TVs are so dam big.
It is also easier to mug for the portable items too.
What will be interesting is shop lifting... as there are fewer shops where will the smack heads get their stuff to sell for a rock?
It's paranoia. House crime is very rare. The OP didn't lock his doors at night.Sad state of living in today's World.
Nicked car radios also a thing of the past. They were virtually currency 30 years ago!
I'd imagine an OEM Sat Nav head unit could be fairly valuable, and a worth upgrade nowadays?
I lock my doors at night. Also have double glazing. If they can get in, they are determined so a safe is pointless.it's that mentality that it will never happen to you, but one day it may, better to be safe than sorry, excuse the pun
Bury it, keep the map to where you buried it in your shoe.I lock my doors at night. Also have double glazing. If they can get in, they are determined so a safe is pointless.
So I'm going to hire some people to 'deshoe' you and I'll find a map to your V12 keys...Bury it, keep the map to where you buried it in your shoe.
Easier to club him on the back of the head when he has them in his hand. No need to do any digging then. Unless you hit him too hard obviously. So I'm going to hire some people to 'deshoe' you and I'll find a map to your V12 keys...

not sure i would say a safe is pointless, most thieves wouldn't stand a chance in getting in to a proper bolted down cash rated safe and far to heavy to carry out, that's assuming they manage find it
You could... but you don't know where I buried the battery. So I'm going to hire some people to 'deshoe' you and I'll find a map to your V12 keys...
Take the radio... then fit AutoAndroid compatible device instead...Back to the 'just threaten you / the kids / the dog until you open it for them.
Most burglaries are opportunistic, and you're right, a safe will prevent the opportunity of taking some of your stuff. Locking the doors and windows helps, but if 'they' think there's stuff worth nicking (Wow! Maserati on the drive, and look at that stereo), any idea how long it takes to break in through a double glazed window? I did it a few years back. About 30 seconds. So the point about hacking or breaking the locks is pretty much null, they'll just go through a window.
So you make sure you have a visible alarm, keep the valuables off obvious display, make sure the place looks secure, and on the vanishingly rare chance that someone does break in (or walks in) hope they don't find everything. As perverse as it sounds, they don't want to be there that much, and are probably scared as well as anything else. <shrug>

agreed about threaten and i would not hesitate to open safe in those circumstances, it's more when house is vacant that a safe is useful, i've seen locksmiths bump euro cylinder and yale type door locks and it's surprisingly easy with the the right tools, i think the good old house brick would be just as effective but a tad nosier on dg glass
Of course, but very few locksmiths moonlight as burglars. Not sure why, now I think about

Is it just me that telling someone to buy a ring camera is just wrong?Get yourself a 'Ring'Camera system or similar. You can buy a whole system for around £800 which is probably a similar price to a decent safe. The external cameras can also come with spot lights and sirens for a bit more money. All linked to your smart phone and recorded on a cloud server.
but worryingly readily available to any tom dick or burglar, even seen battery driven ones available
