Thought it too good to be true

saw a lovely 4200 in good nick and price last weekend. thought we were all good to go to Shiltek to get it inspected this weekend but the owner now says he cant drive the car there as he's uninsured. (only insured to drive his main daily driver) funnily enough he sent me the email from his insurance company where they state they cant cover him even temporarily.

so....cant buy without an indie inspection....which is a shame as it was a lovely motor.

so back to the drawing board methinks

does it normally take a while to get the maser u want?

I got my inspection done at the sellers location, or nearby, the indie inspector can drive it to a/their garage to get it done, covered by the indie insurance cover, cost you another £50-100..........some people look for 1 yr plus!

Personally, I would go and take a look at it yourself armed with all the pointers and info from this site regarding what to look out for. If, after you've looked at it and everything seems to stack up, you could then consider the option of getting the Indie to come out and inspect it. I wouldn't let something unexpected like the sellers circumstances come between you and the possible new love of your life! "Faint heart never won" etc, etc.
Good luck

Ronnie - i agree with you mate. Am trying another avenue as i type this. from my perspective - the car seemed great when i went to see it. everything checked out with (as you say) all pointers i took from this site (and others)

I'm sure Geoff would travel to look at it if asked.
Is it a long way from Shiltech Towers then?

No it's not that far Dave. have spoken to Geoff and he said he would be able to go down there and potentially pick up to expect. so am awaiting a confirmation as to when the car can be picked up. top man....easy to talk to and very accomodating.

Guys, still urge caution...leave the inspection to those in the know who will spot things you never would and stick it up on a ramp, plus they can hook up to SD2 to check ECUs etc.....the best £200 you'll invest in a car...bar none!

To be honest the 4200 is pretty bomb proof, so if its a poor example it will be very obvious. If it drives ok and the clutch and oil pressure are ok, the tyres, brakes and the service up to date, its worth a risk but you would be best to get it inspected.

Of course......but if a pump on way out, needs a clutch....bills for £2K to start with...........

clutch was done about 4K miles ago (it's a Cambiocorsa)....i know there's loads of other things that can go wrong however. tracking was out though, pulls to the left. one reason i wanted to get it looked at. if wishbone is on it's way out then both will have to be changed. or could be some other slight damage.

M300...best not to guess...if geometry needs doing properly its a costly affair...plus the tyres wear very badly on inner shoulder .....let the indie inspection take the load off your shoulders!!!

Just curious to know Guys..would an Indie pick up if the car was needing 4 wheel alignment?
Cheers

If he drove it, yes, when these cars are set up right they're wonderful!. Plus as mesntioned above, tyre wear would be uneven if alignment is bad.

Should be no more than £120 for the alignment, however if new tyres are needed, you need to do a deal there. WHat the current 'gomme' of choice round here? I love F1s but most were heading to Falken IIRC?
