Clacking at the back

Hi - I’ve got a clacking noise at low speed from what seems to be the left rear (from the drivers seat) when changing direction - only when warmed up. I’ve had a good search on the forum but can’t see anything. It’s a 2010 gts mc-shift - clutch readout was 38%worn 2500 miles ago so that hopefully isn’t the issue. Doesn’t seem to be up/down movement related and does the same whether in gear or in neutral (I’ve been trying all sorts !!). It might be my imagination but changes into and out of second seem to be nosier as well (possibly same noise). Hmmmm. Any ideas would be gratefully received as ever !

If it is when you are changing direction is it most likely to be suspension related (bushes, broken springs etc) followed by driveshaft CV joint. I imagine you have cleaned out anything that might be rattling from the boot?

Yes indeed!!! First point of call. I had arb bushes/drop links and cv joints on the list as hopefully all it is. For additional info it’s done 24k but I know that’s not much of an indication of much (just had to replace all front upper and lower bushes). It’s the doesn’t do it cold but does it when warmed up bit that’s a bit worrying - but I guess something near the gearbox could expand when it gets warm?

Handbrake!

Sort of a rattle/clanking. You need to get it fixed or it will crack the hub.

My handbrake shoes died and got pulled up over the hub, cracking one of them as Matt says

I would describe the sound I had as like a playing card in bicycle spokes, and would rise/fall depending on engine load. the faster I went the louder the sound, and it was most noticeable driving past parked cars or low walls (where there was noticeable reverberation)

Mine was like a bit of tin flapping about and yes, window down, lowish speed with the noise bouncing off walls or buildings to confirm.

I did check mine last summer and all was good...it did it again last week so Ill have another check.

it's weird I've heard mine do this a few times too since having the shoes (and hubs) replaced; I'm not sure it's the same sound but definitely falls into that 'tin flapping' / card in spokes realm. I genuinely don't think there is anything broken shoes wise but will have Voicey check next month

if pieces of broken shoe were rattling around in there I'd imagine I'd hear it every time under load. This car is always coming up with new sounds

also at one point I lost a caster shim and that was also causing a clanging/clunking noise -

The shins are U-shaped. Item 15 on this drawing:

Quick update - just collected car back from autoshield (mega as ever) - went for a quick spin so Marios could hear the noise - and it turned out to be a buggered rear shock bush / joint - replaced and now clack free - £140plus firring if anyone ever needs one.
