Breathe
Wish You Were Here
Us and Them
Signs of Life

I could go on, but clearly I have a lot more material to chose from ;)

Many didn't but I very much liked Animals and also The Final Cut. Grantchester Meadows was a pretty mellow track which I need to reacquaint myself with. The rest of Ummagumma not so much.

Anyway, shame about Christine McVie.

Yeah, The Final Cut is not one of my faves, nor Animals TBH. Huge shame about Ms McVie. Fabulous singer / songwriter. A critical part of my youth.

Very sad to hear about Christine McVie - their music defined my teenage years, what a great band with that rare combination of special members.

Re Pink Floyd, I might be in the minority then, I like both before and after, in fact I love them all from the very start to the very end (it seems, including Roger) - I won’t get into the Roger vs David thing though but together they were magic.

Ok except “Several species of small furry animals gathered together in a cave and grooving with a pict” then, that was just weird

Yeah, true. It's hard to disagree with that. Unless you're tripping your t!ts off on acid. Probably.

One of the humblest greatest we’ve lost in Christine McVie. No matter how many times I hear songs like ‘You Make Lovin Fun’ or ‘Oh Daddy’ they still sound as good as the first time I heard them. The passing of Christine McVie has really hit me. For years I had the White album on white vinyl, I can’t remember what party it got left out, too out of it to remember just like FM were in the mid to late 70s.

;) Original tends to be 'what we hear first or most of'

People swear that Genesis was a better band before Gabriel left. 8 years with Gabriel 47 with Collins
Original Fleetwood Mac: 3 years. Without Green 52 years
Pink Floyd much the same. Bands evolve.

Queen kept the same line up until Mercury's death.
The Police pretty much (I think they had 9 months with another member)

I wouldn't inherently argue that the latest line up of Fleetwood Mac were not a parody of the original, but I'm reasonably sure it wasn't the original that was being cited, rather the Rumours / Tusk / Mirage era.

This is an interesting post, but I don't think you can claim a band is better solely because they existed for longer with a different line up, nor indeed, due to their commercial success.

Manic Street Preachers were 6 years with Richey Edwards, 27 without. Almost all of their commercial success is post Edwards, almost all of their fans would likely agree their first 4 albums are their finest work, that's the 3 with Edwards, and the 1 following. The thing is they still have some absolutely incredible output after he left, much like Genesis, who did evolve, and make different music post Gabriel. I personally don't think they made better music either.
I guess, it's all subjective.

Fleetwood Mac's best line up in my opinion was probably the Say You Will era line up, but that's not to suggest that Christine McVie didn't bring some incredible songs, and possibly some of the most commercially successful ones that FM are remembered for. It's a sad, and perhaps also surprising loss given the addictions of the American contingent of FM over the years!

A Rory Gallagher fan Dave.
I with you on Pink Floyd, bit too pretentious for me especially that film Live at Pompeii.

The music is totally subjective, and therefore no argument. The point I was more trying to make (rather than one line up or other being 'better') was more around "Is Genesis still Genesis" It's not the 'original' It's not the 'original' Fleetwood Mac (although your version is closer). Nor is it the 'original' Pink Floyd.

Of course they are the same band, but that being the case 'original' rather ceases to mean anything. Look at the Police. Same line up but wildly different music (of which I like nearly all of it)

Ship of Theseus, anyone?

Big fan of GF Handel myself, especially this time of year. He's been popular since about 1750 :) Got the neighbours in and placed "Messiah" on the turntable......

But I'm rather sad to hear Christine McVie has died.
Exceptional songwriter, beautiful singer and had what it took to keep an unmanageable band together.
RIP the lovely McVie.

Slight drift but do you think Phil Collins is in a real bad way? The final shows Genesis played he looked ill. I'm a big fan especially that period between Wind and Wuthering to Abacab and of course Face Value. Some people have got a real dislike for him, my mate reckons it was when he released Another Day In Paradise and it was him being false making out he was concerned about the homeless but he's hardly been the only one.

I don't think Collins has got much more time with us, we will soon be having a similar thread as this one for him.

Personally I was a big Genesis with Gabriel fan but over time I seem to have mellowed and quite like the Collins era too, it's just different. Every one has different tastes and those tastes change but as far as Pink Floyd are concerned I still prefer Wish You Here album to Dark Side but I suspect I'm in the minority.

Very ill. We saw him the Thursday night. Very clear that that's it for Genesis. It was a proper farewell tour, and really quite poignant.

Personally I remember the opprobrium towards him since the Gabriel rift but really don't understand it, and haven't heard much about it for many years. Personally I like a lot of his stuff, but far more with Genesis than solo.

Wish You Here album to Dark Side

I think if I was going to listen to one or the other, Wish would edge it more than 50% of the time, but Dark Side is still one I'll reach for. I'm also very fond of Delicate Sound of Thunder, and Momentary Lapse (first concert I ever went to) as well as The Division Bell. Haven't listened to The Wall for many years.
