Hi All,
I've got a question about chips on the side glass on my 3200. I went to a nature reserve today and parked the car in a gravel/dirt car park. I went for a hike with some friends and when I came back a few hours later I found 5 or 6 chips in my drivers window, all relatively small (none larger than about 7mm) and all pretty shallow, none causing any cracks or splintering. They were all fresh, a fine white powder around them.
I can't work out quite how they got there: I assume someone must have spun their wheels in the car park and kicked up some stones (though checking the bodywork around the car I couldnt see any other chips on any of the other glass or on any of the metal work, which I imagine there would be if someone had done a burnout when leaving the car park). I had driven to this place with my drivers window down- are there any stories of stuff somehow getting trapped between door skin and glass when the windows are down and chipping the glass? The final option could be that someone tried to break into the car, though they must have been using a pretty rubbish tool to only chip glass and not smash it.
Anyhow, I suppose my real question is what to lookout for when I get the driverside glass replaced- I read somewhere about a micro switch that needs to be looked out for. Are there any other horror stories I should be wary of? I just know that my insurance will send out Autoglass or an equivalent and I can't imagine the technician will have done too many 3200s in their time. The car and I are in Sweden at the moment and I will be bringing it back to the UK in 5 weeks or so. In the mean time I am thinking of getting a local automotive glass company to put some of that stone chip resin into the side glass. Whilst my UK insurer could replace the side glass for me out here, I would feel more comfortable getting it done in the UK where there is at least the possibility of taking it to a specialist/main dealer if needs be, not to mention the fact that I can imagine it could take the best part of 5 weeks just to order in the correct glass.
Cheers for any help/ thoughts you could offer on replacing side glass
