Back at ya Dave.

I have been pondering your problem and wonder whether your lambda's are throwing a wobbly now there's increased back-pressure from the standard BB's? Just a thought

Hope the guys sort it for you.

Cheers, Miles.

Good luck Miles. I hope it's a cheap fix.

I hope it's cheap too Benny, though I know I'm hoping against hope. They have a stool in the garage that they offer you when they have bad news. I've sat on that stool a couple of times recently!

It's better to sit on the stool than stand on it whilst waiting for it to be kicked away. Let's hope it doesn't come to that!

It won't come to that Benny. I have no intention of letting this get to me. There is no financial logic to owning these cars. I knew that when I bought it. I'm aching a bit at the moment and the war-chest is looking like it might be all but empty before too long, but not long after I will wake up, look out of my window and see MY Maserati outside. In time that will be enough to cover the cost.

A true enthusiast. I applaud your fabulous attitude.

All the best with it Miles... Sounds like we'll be in need of some kind of forum knees-up once this is behind you!

Well I got a call from Geoff on Saturday and it looks like the diagnosis is over and the re-build can begin.

Having lifted out the engine, and having found the oil pump to be okay, it was a case of turning the engine @rse side up and getting into the nether regions.

The photo's below show clearly that the crank shells are worn, and at the flywheel end are worn through to the copper, which explains why there was metal 'dust' trapped behind the filters.

The photo above also shows that one shell has been scored, but thankfully not at the expense of damaging the crank as shown below.

So all the crank and big end shells are to be replaced and the crank itself cleaned, and given that they're in there anyway, all timing chains replaced.

All in all a painful experience (I haven't driven my Maserati in nearly two months and I'm getting withdrawal symptoms), but god forbid, if I hadn't caught it in time I could have blown the engine, and once she is returned to fine fettle, all the main wear points will be replaced and she'll be ready for another 70K miles :D

Not looking forward to the bill though. :(

Hi Miles, did they find anything specific that caused the damage or was it just wear and tear? If it was just wear and tear does that indicate that more of us can look forward to expensive rebuilds at 70k or was it just your 'bad luck'?

Miles, glad at least there's light at the end of the tunnel. To be honest though I can't tell whether this should be classified as good or bad news compared to the many alternatives... Let's stay positive and side with the former. Hope nothing further is uncovered along the way to a healthy recovery.

I can't answer that with any degree of certainty Benny. Geoff didn't mention any specific event that might have brought this about, but rather leant towards general wear and tear for an engine that's done 70K+ miles. Looking at the end shell in the first picture, I can't disagree as it's showing wear rather than damage.

With that said there are cars out there that have now topped 100K (though I don't recall what work they've had along the way) and they're running just fine, so who knows?

Time will tell.

Ooh, that sounds a bit ominous Andrew?
