Can a 4200 CC Gearbox be remanufactured/reconditioned?...

Hi,

I just found out that my 52 plate Spyder with 54k miles on the clock has a gearbox that is shot.

I have found a couple of spare gearboxes I can purchase to have fitted, however, I wondered if these gearboxes could be remanufactured or reconditioned.

As far as I understand from reading, these are essentially manual 6 speed transmissions, with computer driven actuators changing gears.

I may have misunderstood, but if they are essentially manual gearboxes, shouldn't a transmission company be able to rebuild them, as they are ZF transmissions aren't they?..

Please excuse my ignorance if I have completely misunderstood, I am just searching for the best and most cost effective way to replace or recon my gearbox.

Thx.

Not sure about them being ZF, but I'd not be surprised if they can be re-built
Although it may be cheaper to find a known good one.

Now define 'shot' because repairing the box is going to be no good if the actuators are blow (and yes, you're right. It's the same as the manual box with a load of pipes, valves, computers and stuff(tm) to make it shift, sort of)

Someone will be along eventually with more nouse than me, yep the CC is more or less a manual with a, i think they call it a "robotised" clutch.
Regarding reconditioning, remanufacturing, what I would say is that " There is nothing broken, that cant be fixed" so I would imagine yours can be repaired or you can buy a replacement for ease.

Best of luck,

As Cat says they are not ZF. The cambio corsa box is Maserati designed and based on the systems used by Ferrari.

First you need to find out what is wrong, is it an actuator issue or maybe even a clutch problem. Get it connected to an SD2 diagnostic and determine the issue.

Thx :).

So the gearbox light started coming on and it started to stick in gear. I could shift it to neutral, then back in gear and it seemed to be ok, but there was quite a smell from the rear.

It went into a specialist, they dropped the gearbox on the subframe, the pump and relay was recent and good, they tested the potentiometers and actuators, all fine. They inspected the gearbox to advise it looked like it had been replaced already, and the gearbox in the car now had definitely done many more miles than the car. The oil had a burnt smell and they had replace the oil only last week, and they are suggesting the synchro is worn, so the suggestion is to look for a full replacement unit.

Real shame is I have only driven the car three times before a number of niggly things started going wrong, had those fixed and now the gearbox is worn :(....

It's 14 years old now don't forget David,..not sure there ZF though.. as you say there a manual gearbox with remote hydraulic actuators controlled by an a ECU

Just buy a good second hand unit, there's lots of 4200's in breakers..

Hmm, That sounds like a bit of a throwaway answer, in honesty.

David, where are you based?

There is a manual for the gearbox rebuild somewhere on the web I think. I would happily make a bet that the bearings are off the shelf and if a synchro is worn you could buy it from Maserati.

I am told by someone in the know that the diff backlash is poorly set from the factory giving a whine that resulted in warranty replacements, if mine ever failed I would rebuild to remove this issue. Depending on where you are I can put you in touch with someone.

The whine is quite common. Mine did it. Never got any worse in the years I had it.

That's what Edd told me too. He replaced a few due to noise when he worked at an MD. Usually to no effect as they did it on the car, but if the box is out it can be set properly and eliminate the whine as I understand it.

Worth doing if you're rebuilding anyway. Given that over about 15 mph the exhaust drowned it out, I really did not care :)

My thoughts exactly, I can't hear it so it doesn't bother me most of the time. But I know it's there so if the chance comes up I'll get it done right...

I think you are right. The rebuild procedure is from page 458 in the M138 workshop manual if that's any help.

Has anyone replaced their gearbox/differential fluid - I've been quoted £112 from a MD so thinking of getting this done, seems that this can sometimes get neglected as the engine takes priority, but as I have a Cambiocorsa so I think it's a good idea.

*This is not to be confused with the Cambicorsa fluid which should be changed with every new clutch, at around £170 or £390 if done when not swapping the clutch, prices again from a MD.

Easy job just need to remove right hand exhaust hanger to access fill/level plug.
Drain plug right at bottom towards torque tube end 75W90.
