Talking of warranties. The salesman told me they could offer me a 12 month warranty for £400. Would a low clutch figure be considered a regular maintenance item or would I have to wait for a complete clutch failure for it to be covered by the warranty?

Consumables such as clutches, brake pads and discs are not usually covered by any warranties, it would depend on the warranty wording.

Clutch collapse may be covered but at £400 it has got to be very basic...the warranty that Richard Grace provides is over 1,400.

Try the AA Breakdown insurance. It was on special offer last month if you already have a account. £75 per month and it covers most BROKEN parts up to £500. With up to three claims per year. It covered my Golf's water pump and the Volvos ignition barrel.

Back to the warranty....at that price they will wriggle out of everything and expect you to use Holfords for repairs.

Just to echo: Wear items are not normally covered. I just renewed my warranty. List would have been £2k. I paid about half that direct from Warrantywise, but £400 seems *very* cheap, although since you get a 6 month warranty (effectively) from a dealer, maybe it's only the extension.

If you want the car and you're happy with everything else, just make sure you've got £3k in the bank and drive it until it does a MAF.
