Cambio Corsa Clutch

My last 4200 was a manual. However this time I am considering buying a cambio corsa, less rare than a manual therefore more choice.
I am going to view one over the weekend but the garage selling it does not know the percentage of clutch remaining and although they have a service department they say they don't have the equipment to find that information.
I was wondering if that kind of information is a part of the service invoicing or could it be ascertained from an OBDII reader?

Might be on a service report, but certainly can't be got from an ODBII, needs full Maserati system. Thus, your seller can't do it

When you get your PPI, they'll be able to do it for you ;) But it's not that great an indicator. More useful (perhaps) is the number of miles since the clutch was changed.

Go on mileage from the last clutch change as what Catman says is true.

If its done less than 10k I would be assured, if its showing 30% plus wear and 20k miles you are in the unknown territory where they can let go at any point. If its showing 60% plus and 35k miles, I would be less worried as it means that clutch is working and has worn past the mid ground where they prematurely fail.

GranSports break their clutch cover tangs alot more than a standard 4200, its probably down to the more aggressive clutch change where it thumps the spring tangs with more ferocity.

Its a bit of a lottery I am afraid.

O.K. thanks for that. When I spoke to the salesman he didn't have much of a clue although he said he had skimmed through the paperwork and could find no evidence of a clutch change. If that is the case and the car has done 50k + miles presumably it will be near the end of its life?

If it has done 50k on that clutch, it's quite a feat. More likely on it's second. Matt sounds a bit negative saying it's a lottery. I don't think that failures pre 30k (say) are overly common, but we certainly have seen some with lower mileages fail due to finger collapse, which is clearly a PITA.

From my experience (three cars) If the car drives well and was not owned by a racing loon them 1% per 1,000 miles is standard in latter 4200s.

However this is if the car bas been used across a wide range of driving ie not most of its life atop start in the city.

Matt is right re the GS and the clutch and its ability to go pop even at low %.

The CC read out if available is on a separate A4 paper which runs to two pages if printed out from the last SD3 xheck at service. The garage may have on record the last reading...I know Emblem keep good records including the wear %.

So does frequently changing up at 7k revs without lifting knacker the clutch...?

No, they don't like banging off the line, get it rolling and the clutch engaged with a firm but not brutal pull away then floor it and you will get close to mine that has >63,000 miles and was still hanging in there!

Mechanically sympathetic changes help to prelong the life of the clutch tangs. Not slipping the clutch prelongs the clutch facings.

Mine went over 50k before it was replaced and even then it wasn't slipping just select neutral every now and again

What error codes did you have, if any? My own QP started selecting neutral on the odd occasion. Now it only has neutral and cannot be driven. We suspect gearbox sensor pack based on P17772 P1770 and P1769. Now concerned it might be a clutch as well!!

That's nowhere near as bad as I've read, why have I seen QPs with bills of £3500+

Just for info,
Bought my car 34k miles, 37% clutch wear, did not last another 2.5k miles, clutch history was not known and assumed to be on 2nd.
Don't assume!
£2.8k all in with a rocker cover and headlight washer unit!!!!

To put this into prospective my GFs 2003 Mini One needed a new clutch last year. Dick Lovett quote (as it has been serviced by them since new) was £1495 inc VAT.

And yes she is daft getting such an old car maintained at a Main Dealer....but I did get their price down after becoming involved.

My other half has a 2012 2.0 tsi scirocco. When she first got it the clutch failed, covered under warranty VW changed it but we asked hope much it would be if not under warranty and they would want £1500+VAT

All that said HR Owen are doing fixed prices on their website for clutch changes inclusive of VAT it's not far off where it should be http://www.hrowen.co.uk/maserati/offers/maserati-clutch-replacement/890/offerdetail.aspx
