I'm going to guess it's a GT / QP type
So there are a couple of possibilities.
1) The grommet over the boot handle button gets pushed in and holds the switch down. That screws things up. It's simple to gently prise back into place.
2) The key actually needs a couple of seconds pushing before the boot unlocks. I don't really understand the idea behind it, since you still need to unlock the car then press the button on the fob for two seconds. Go figure.
There's a re-sync process for the key as well, but one step at a time.

Well, not if it's taken you nearly 2 years, it's not quick

Hi
Yes, it's a GT and the grommet was pushed up into the boot lid. I have fixed this issue but still nothing. I'm wondering if it may have shoemrted out where it was stuck in?
Where are the fuses?
why not just go to HR Owen in Acton? It cost under £300 to fix my wiring issue there, which they managed to do while I waited.I’ve just had a similar range of issues to this on my QPV:
In short - it basically needs to go to a locks/electrical specialist and probably needs a couple of new parts. Any suggestions I can head to from North London?
- initially the boot button stopped working and the boot refused to lock - fixed by a lock system reset and re balancing the spacers either end of the boot lid
- then we had the ability to lock but needed the remote key to get in
- then the boot lost its ability to release even with the remote - making noises but not releasing - fixed by pushing down slightly on the boot as you open it
- at some point during the process we totally lost the ability to get in - so had to use the key. However the car wouldn’t then release this - so had to unscrew the cover above the number plate to get it out - showing that the release cable was routed slightly wrongly and so getting stuck
Or Dick Lovett in Swindon, who 'only' charged me £89 to re-set the boot locking gremlins on my QPV, which they managed to do before I had even finished my cup of tea.why not just go to HR Owen in Acton? It cost under £300 to fix my wiring issue there, which they managed to do while I waited.
