Here we go then.. The troubled 222 was running on 5 pots at low revs when I viewed it, but the seller assured me it wasn't before he changed the rotor arm, cap and leads. I asked him to do a compression check the following day which he did and reported back. As a mechanic I was somewhat worried about the low results, between 85 - 95 psi, but he said that was about right for such a low comp/ratio engine. Importantly there wasn't much difference between them all.
Now it's in my hands I've been investigating further, it's No 6 cylinder, nothing happening at all, or at least below 2,500 rpm. I've swapped the plug and lead, no difference, done my own compression test which wasn't much different to his.
Next step is the injector, it was stood with stale fuel for years before he fired it up, so I'm guessing/hoping it's that.
I'm supposed to be getting the Alfa GTV ready for sale but it's worrying me!
In it's favour, it starts from cold instantly and doesn't smoke at all when hot.
