Before I do something sensible....

Schoolboy error, Chris! I’m curious to know what figure it gave you.

I make a point to avoid looking at mine but did so today after a relatively short local run: 4.5mpg average. I’ve emptied a tank doing 7.5 average. Fortunately it’s an occasionally used toy.

Over 90k miles it was <18. In my ownership it's been sub 16.....

it is, however, and EPIC thing. The engineering, craftsmanship, presence, acceleration, brakes, controls (I could go on) are remarkable. But there is a lack of both nutsack and visceral appeal.

Not horrific, but not commuter-friendly either.

Mine delivers on the tingles, but I think only because it is very different to a regular Conti. They’re very refined, so can’t deliver any rawness. I think a Huracan parked next to mine will satisfy all needs between them!

Sensible policies for a better Britain! Mine's a speed so not quite so regular, but equally even more refined. Could certainly go for a Lambo, but well out of my price bracket!

And don't me wrong, if you want to go fast it's sphincter clenchingly so! But doesn't have that ability to make your balls crawl into your abdomen when standing still......

100% do it Mark. Nothing better than a big old comfortable barge with a ton of comfort/power for buttons IMHO.

I'm going through a load of car changes and really can't part with the XJL. A big comfy well spec'd powerful fast supercharged V8 500bhp car for £16.5k. Crazy VFM.

I've done a main dealer service each year that isn't even expensive, a set of front brakes and a water pump. Not even needed to change tyres or anything else. These kind of cars just breeze along with zero stress or strain so ultra reliable.

Do it.

Having tried the "one car fits all " with a C63 and an M4 I have finally decided its not possible!
A daily is a daily and should be a fit for purpose utility. I cannot see past a Skoda! I have just bought a 2019 Superb Sportline and it really is A6/E Class good. Honestly! Although my Yeti still remains the best car I have had. Full stop. Except of course for the Gransport LE I just took delivery from Richard!
Good to see you back in a Maser @flexwing . Looks lovely.

Mark - instead of the boring E Class or the expensive-to-run QP 6 GTS, why not do the sensible thing (for a daily car) and get a QP 6 Diesel? Gets you back in a Maser, but costs buttons to buy and gives over 40mpg (I would guess).

Mine is the same interior/exterior colours. Also well specd car but doesn’t have skyhook. I also did a road trip around the lakes and other places covering 1500 miles back in September. I was surprised that I got 30mpg in a S petrol but I suppose a lot of the driving was cruising. I don’t want to get into what’s best petrol or diesel, it’s up to the owner and their requirements, but with diesel costing slightly more and the fact that the Ghibli diesel needs an extra service are they any cheaper to run these days. I suppose if your doing big mileage then probably yes.

You’re right regarding serving costs and fuel costs. Thanks to the crazy rise in fuel prices and that Maserati recommend premium diesel, it now costs over £100 to fill up - last fill £106.44!!
However you save annually on RFL and of course better fuel mpg. Given I have only covered 20,000 miles is some mitigation for me.

This is my conundrum, a Maser is incoming anyway. So in theory a boring reliable work car which I'll do 30 miles a day in would make perfect sense.
My previous E-Class was everything I wanted, reliable, quick enough for the motorway dash, but returned 40+ mpg and had a decent infotainment.

The only issue I have with the Ghibli is the lack of space in the back. There's much more in the E-Class, hence I bought one previously.

I guess I could not buy either and get a 6 Series convertible! :D (Does it count as a mid-life crisis if I've already owned a couple of Maserati's?)

In my quest for the ultimate car that does everything, I did test drive an Alfa Giulia quadrifoglio. I'm going to be a bit controversial, but I found it to be too smooth and refined. On the other hand the M3 F80 was too aggressive! I would love to try a Ghibli S for size!
On a lighter note, I'm sitting in the gransport, taking it all in whilst Richard talks me through the controls, and I notice a loud ticking coming from the engine. I'm thinking variators, what a pain, when Richard points out the pneumatic drill at the adjoining building site- doh!
Clever salesman that Richard, having the pneumatic drill going so you couldn't hear the variators

Looking at the £££'s involved, it's 50 quid a month in road tax before I even drive the thing.
It will do half the MPG as the E-Class and 'consumables' will be 2-3 times the cost.

I'm guessing with the mileage I do annually it will cost me circa 7-8,000 to run vs about 2-3,000 for the Merc.

Sensibility however, has never been my strong point.

it entirely depends when middle life is for you... which ultimately means, there is no such thing if you are no longer middle aged. So fill your boots and bugger what folk think :) :D

I think the difference for me is I picked a car that had bottomed with zero depreciation. So higher running costs but no depreciation. The XJL has been very reliable too and surprisingly very cost effective to service/run.

Would I rather be in a rare different comfy fast supercharged V8 than an E Class? All day every day yes for me. However I don't do the miles you do.

I could do a thousand miles in it and feel fresh as a daisy at the other end.

I tried going 5 series touring and e class estate a few years back and had a couple. The 6 pots were OK but the 4 pots felt a step too far. Also I had a 530d M Sport 2007/57 and the mpg was woeful. They had it back for 3 months and did loads of tests then could find any issues. Drove perfect, not down on power but low 22's AVG! I see that on the XJL SS with a fair bit of shorter journey's as well.

I certainly wouldn't look at anything less than a V6 in either Merc or BMW form. They're just gutless.

Agreed. I'm not a big diesel fan that doesn't help my plight!

Although I do find myself looking at SQ7's at the moment which is a 3-5 year old diesel
