Battery

Apologies for the idiot questions!

I need a new battery as I'm starting to get some niggles with the electric door handles. It looks like it might still be the original battery in the car so it's 8 years old!

Recommendations seem to be Bosch S6 - where's the best place to get it from?

I'm not much of a mechanic so how easy is it to install myself? Any tips on doing it? Presumably the fact that the quick release is on the black lead means that you take that one off first and then put them back in the reverse order?

I even sound pathetic to myself now!

Thanks in advance.

If you're that worried the RAC and AA with supply and fit a battery but it really is just 2 connections and something to stop it rattling round the boot

Costco are competitive if you have a card

I am similarly mechanical minded to you Doohickey but I managed to do a battery change on a QP.
From a recess in the boot.
It went swimmingly and I did a write up on this forum about how easy it was
If I can do it then so can you!

I got my S5 from Euro Car parts - £85. They have 25% off at the moment - just Google Euro Car Parts discount code for latest offers.

A second for Eurocarparts but measure the physical size of the thing and make sure you're buying the right one. Their website doesn't know one Maser from the next.

Extremely easy to install, with two caveats -

1. It's heavy, so not ideal if you are a limp-wristed weakling. Can't see it troubling you.

2. Very important - remove the negative/black lead first, and refit the negative/black lead last. I can't stress how important this is - if you do it the other way round and remove the positive/red first, or fit it last, you will undoubtedly touch some bodywork with the spanner, and understand why I've said it's important.

Since the negative lead is bonding the battery to the car body, it doesn't matter if you accidentally bridge the terminal to the bodywork. No sparks. Once the negative is removed, it also doesn't matter if you touch the positive to the bodywork, again no sparks.

Other than that, it's possibly the easiest thing to change on the car.

Remember to refit the breather pipe to the left hand side too, the battery will have a cap covering it when you buy it so you will need to remove this first and then insert the tube, so to speak

I bought this via Ebay

www.clickcarparts.co.uk

Exide Premium 100 Ah 900CCA 12v Type 017 car battery 4 year warranty EA1000 £77.88 incl courier delivery. IIRC the 900CCA is higher than other makes which show 830CCA

I second the comments about the weight and neg earth !

So - got a Bosch unit as recommended and fitted it myself. Once I'd realised that I needed to remove the other bit of boot liner it was remarkably easy (perhaps should have read Dave's 'how to' first!). Felt pretty chuffed.

However, after I'd fitted it none of the electric handles worked including the button on the dash for the boot. I put it down to the battery perhaps not being fully charged so put the trickle on and left it over night. When I went out this morning, the boot and passenger doors worked fine but the driver's still didn't work.

Driven it for about a couple of hours all told today and the driver's door handle isn't working. Did a battery reset when I got back and now none of the handles are working. I've put the trickle back on so we'll see what happens next time.

Any thoughts on what might be going on?

Thanks.

Low battery will stop the micro switches on the door from working. A few lock and unlocks and restarts with a fully charged battery will see them working properly again.

If it's like the QP there is a setting that turns on/off the electronic door handle function. Maybe it has reset itself to "off"?
