Baby's first words - Secondary Air System Fault

My 2012 GranTurismo S spoke to me yesterday; it said "check engine" (fortunately not flashing ) and so I opened the bonnet, the engine was still there thank God but my OBD code reader said "Secondary Air Injection insufficient flow Banks 1 &2". Should I be worried? I will obviously chat to Autoshield tomorrow for a proper fix but can I afford to eat today?

It’s probably not a massive issue.

The secondary air pump operates when the engine is cold to put extra air into the exhaust to heat up the cats quickly.

It could be a pipe that has come adrift, a hole in a pipe or the pump (fan) itself. Probably not the solenoids as it would only have a code for one bank.

Check if the pipe in the picture (16) is still connected, might be an easy fix.

Probably either secondary air pump, the control valves (silver tins at front of engine), solenoid, vac line or the pipe across the two has corroded. Some cost more than others but even if it’s the pump (most expensive bit) I think they’re a few hundred quid.

The system pumps air into the exhaust to heat the cats up quicker on initial start.

We had one in last week with the same issue. It’s rebooked to have its manifolds off to decoke them. Got another in the following week for the same.

We will, however check the flow from the pump and the lines first before we do.

Yikes, that’s a pain!

I had this about a year ago on mine. After a day of fault finding and pipe tracing, I found two faults.

1- A hole in the vacuum pipe that leads to the Exhaust valves. The hole was where it goes round the drivers side front wheel arch.

2. The Non Return Valve (item 43 in the below drawing) was faulty. I assume this was due to some dust/debris getting sucked into it from the holed pipe, stopping the valve fully closing.

As well as the EML, I could also hear that the Secondary air pump was running more than usual.

Also, would it be a good idea to edit the title to reflect the actual subject?

eg. Babies first words - Secondary Air system fault.

Would help you get replies and others find it in a search.

Wow that surprises me is it down to short journeys, driving like Miss Daisy or poor fuel ?
Nearly every modern engine I have had apart except poorly maintained ones are very clean internally.

Thought that the polite thing is to finish the thread.
Just back from the wonderful Marios at Autoshield. Basically it was crud in the air filter secondary air pump causing the problem and it is all sorted at a very reasonable price.
Also an unsuccessful attempt by my wife to buy his lovely yellow Fiat 500 on display behind the counter.
