Ok so those of you who followed my prior post know the pistons met the valves after a failed water pump pulley split the timing belt.
After trying extensively to remove the cylinder heads in situ, to see the extent of the damage, my view is it is not worth the endless grief of limited access and seized bolts.
I can now confirm that with the shop manual it is a relatively simple task to pull the engine out of the top of the car with a friends borrowed engine hoist. Just make sure you take loads of pictures and mark the frighteningly large number of bits which come off!
It's now off for an inspection at the engine shop to see if the engine is junk or just in need of a top end overhaul - either way it looks like a rather expensive mishap.

- If the former does anyone know of a good source for a second hand engine to refit - seems to be one on ebay at the moment?
- If the later outcome does anyone know a source of decent affordable valves/guides/cylinder heads?
