when I needed a general purpose run around i got an old korando, took the back seats out. it great for everything. dog car ( 3 mad border collies ), carting tools/ building materials , big supermarket trips.
tough as old boots, non turbo deisel. can pull a cross chanel ferry , biuld to withstand an exocett......cheap as chips. problem is parts. thats an ebay trawl.
when or if it dies on me I would replace it with an old G-wagon.

Dem,

I would use a Porsche Cayenne 4.5ls but thats not in budget..

Found one that is, it's a bit leggy and I've never really considered one. Have you had one yourself? What are they like? The looks are very Marmite I think, but could be convinced by ownership experience. The marque would make a good addition to the fleet too.

And another one here that looks better with less miles:

Gee Dan...they are better value than 4200s!!

Don't know much about them....but if they've proved reliable and robust...then a steal and obvious choice!!!

Let us know how you get on.

the black one is very nice Dan however, they can prove to be costly to run, just look at this.

This car needed a new gearbox.

Jesus christ they're cheap! Always assumed the Cayenne S was far pricier. Not sure about the looks, but who cares....you get a lot for your money.

Went to look at black cayenne as Mrs rs48635 likes them. Funnily enough that one had a gearbox issues.
Unsurprisingly for a premium marque, best advice is FMDSH, few careful owners and believable miles. Seem to have dropped into price territory of "normal car buyers" who may not have the stomach for serious service work.

Good luck!

Went to the dealer of the black one above and ended up walking out absolutely furious.

The pressure selling technique was the worst, most aggressive I've ever experienced. I basically had to agree to buying the car and put a deposit down before he'd let me drive it.
I took the Clio as it's the car I'm replacing, the salesman asked if I wanted to part ex it, i told him depended on what they'd offer me for it. He went off to his manager who then came back with the keys at arms length and menacing look on his face and said "I don't like Renaults", and then walked past a megane back to his office. With that I walked out furious.

I then drove the hour back home and went to garage around the corner that I've bought 5 or 6 cars from over the last 10 years, sat down and had a cup of tea and did a deal on a 4.4 X5.

He's going to source me a good low milage one and buy the Clio all for the right money.

So, an X5 will be sat on the drive next weekend. Quest over.
