Mike, does the merc spare fit in the under-floor space in the boot fairly well? I know you may not have seen the OEM one in place, but if it fits well then that's a bonus.

It's the identical tyre 185/60 17 and rim 6x17 as the OEM space saver, that's why I selected it, therefore fits identically as the OEM space saver under the boot floor....with a hump....just as the OEM with a humped boot floor.

Cool, that's what I thought, thanks. Worthwhile tracking one down and getting a spacer, bolts, inflator and fitting kit. I'm hoping to do more of the long touring journeys later this year when the family goes over to China for a few months, so a spare would be the best thing to have. Great work tracking this down.

Just discovered a little problem...
I took a picture of the hub and there are two hex screw heads, that will prevent a hub adapter to be fitted, just where the tapped holes in the hub adapter need to be.
However all may not be lost. I assume these are to locate the brake disc so the disc is positioned so not to cover the wheel bolt tapped holes. If the case these could be safely removed when the hub adapter is fitted, for the hub adapter bolts will do the same job. I recall some cars have a countersunk screw, and some nothing at all! Will talk to the hub adapter people tomorrow if they have come across this little problem before.

That sounds logical Mike, but what happens when you take the spacesaver and the hub adapter off after using it and need to put the actual wheel back on, will it work, or can you just put the screws back in the disc hub..??

Would the hub adaptor not have a small hollow machined out...this would also serve as a locator and be marked on the reverse side?

You are correct mike it can be removed they offer no fixing strength.

On the rear the disc would be held by the handbrake, the front might be a little trickier.

Keep it up fella.

The problem being, remember this is a hub adapter, so where you would machine a small hollow to clear the nut head...is where the tapped hole will be for the space saver to bolt to.

I'm sure the only purpose is so when you fit the disc it is located in position so the holes line up for the bolts to pass through the disc to the tapped holes in the hub behind. If you have a car with studs and nuts instead of using bolts, you slip the disc over the studs which locates the disc.
Remember the same problem could apply with another alternative space saver, if there is no recess in the wheel for these nut heads.
So hopefully its a case of just removing these little bolts when fitting the hub adapter, and replacing them after removing the hub adapter.
I'm also thinking it might be better if the hub adapter has studs instead of a tapped hole for the space saver to bolt to using taper seat nuts. The original maserati wheel bolts are too long anyway so shorter bolts would be required.
Yet another note, if you are looking for alternative space savers, the Mercedes wheel even though the same M14 uses a smaller 17 AF bolt compared to the Maserati 22 AF. Again not a problem for the original bolts are too long using the Mercedes wheel, but may be a problem if you are considering another alternative, make sure a 22mm socket will go down the hole of the wheel!

Hub adapters ordered this morning.
I have decided to go with studs and nuts to secure the space saver to the hub adapter.
Two reasons.
It is easy to mount the hub adapter to the car using the new bolts that are supplied with the hub adapter, with it being small and light. It is then easier to mount the space saver to the hub adapter by just hooking the wheel on the studs and then spinning the nuts on. Also you have no risk of cross threading compared with using bolts into the aluminium hub adapter. Thinking it might be wet and dark when you have a puncture so easier the better.
Steel studs are stronger than an aluminium tapped hole. Although the supplier says there is no problem with the aluminium tapped hole in their adapters, as long as you are careful and don't over tighten, I just feel that studs are better in this application, plus easier to mount the wheel as stated above.

Now unfortunately the cost has increased slightly.
My original enquiry was a figure of £80+carriage+vat for a pair, and apparently this was a trade price which they should not have advised (so around £115 all in delivered)
Having studs instead of tapped holes is also more expensive.
The bottom line is that I have paid £156 all in delivered to my door, so £78 each.

I should receive the pair middle of next week, and if okay, Parisien you are welcome to have first refusal. I understand the price has gone up by about £20 and if this is too much I will offer it to other members.

I didn't want to order anymore than a pair incase I had a problem and a load of scrap aluminium!

Cheers,
Mike

Hold on!!!
Let me trial fit when I get it next week.
I think I have thought of everything but I would hate for a second order to go in and they be wrong.
My order was for a pair at £156 all in, and there is scope for further discounts depending on quantity certainly once they are tooled up.
If there is a worry over no one having a spare/getting a spare for the LeMans trip I am quite happy for the group to borrow my 'prototype' wheel and hub adapter.
Cheers.
