4200 Space saver wheel & tyre sizes

Does anyone know the spec of the official space saver tyre for the 4200? Is there even a standard way to describe them?

I was talking to a guy who works for an alloy wheel company and he reckons they can make a wheel as long as they have the tyre size it fits and the other sizing details.

I don't know jack about space savers, so from those of you with more experience of this, would it be better to go with the official size, or would any do as long as the radius, bolt holes, clearances etc. are met? I guess that way we could fit a thinner / cheaper tyre as my guess is the vredstein on the official wheel will be expensive...

I'm looking into it as I am likely to do a few long trips each year, and after watching Simon squirting gunk into his tyre at Llandow the other week I think a spare would be a good investment. Would have to buy a jack as well, of course...

Thanks.

You are right the tyre on the space saver is very expensive. However the more practical problem is that if you use a cheaper tyre and wheel combination it won't fit in the spare wheel well. The only reason the space saver fits is the collapsed nature of the space saver tyre when deflated. If it won't go in the wheel well then you are better off buying the 4200 front wheel and tyre and standing it up in the boot ( which it will do inflated)

No I don't have the sizes, only that the XC90 spacesaver tyre is taller than the full size so no good.
There appears to be two options.
A fully inflated spacesaver that fits beneath the boot floor, that was optional on the 3200 and some Ferrari's. This must be smaller in height than the full size, but acceptable.
Then the deflated spacesaver that also fits beneath the boot floor. This I assume inflates to a similar size to the full size.
Why Maserati changes the spacesaver design I don't know. Maybe there is an issue with running a smaller diameter wheel with the rear gearbox on the 42/GS...I don't know?

That tyre is also used on:

Vredestein Space Master Porsche: 911 Turbo, Cayman S; Maserati: Spider; MB: SL si there should be plenty available from old porkers!

What are the chances the wheel is a match?

Curious; just had a look on fleabay and they are all coming up as 16" rims on 911's...

Nil I'm afraid - the Porsche wheel has a different bolt pattern. The tyre is right though - our Cayennes have them. It's a very odd looking thing, with folded sidewalls.

The guy I was talking to has come back as £360+vat each for the wheels, so probably not worth it...but maybe worth contacting anyone you know in the business to see if there are cheaper alternatives or discounts for clubs etc.

I'll be back in Blighty next week and will have a go ringing round some wheel makers.

That price was was based on 18" wheels. I've asked about 17" instead and given him the vredstein tyre specs - he had assumed 18 was needed as the standard wheels are 18" It also assumes 11 or more orders. Price goes above £400 for less than that.

Might be worth contacting Image wheels to see what they can do. I'm fairly sure their prices are lower for their cast range.

These were "billet" wheels, MAF. Not sure what the difference is - I'm new to all this. I'll ask about the cast ones : )

Or we can look to china! $100 per wheel, minimum order 100units...there are thousands of companies out there that would try...but would we trust them?

Interesting Drew.......worth following up?...but will the real hassle/cost be getting a cheap enough tyre to fit same?

Billet wheels are made from a solid piece of aluminium (or 2/3 in the case of split rims), presumably on a lathe or milling machine. Cast are made of cast aluminium, molten metal pored into a mould. Billet are usually more expensive, so cast wheels from Image should be cheaper.

I was thinking that Porsche/MB spare tyres could be bought from eBay as complete package, rim and tyre, and then re-mounted to a new suitable rim. The spare on my Cayenne is an absolutely identical tyre to that supplied for the Maserati, on the examples I've seen. As far as I know, the folding space-saver tyres aren't available for retail purchase, but they are readily for sale on eBay pre-mounted to rims.

Agree Drew, there are plenty of Vreds available on fleabay with the folding wall, we know the 17 fits the tyre well in the boot. Presumably they get away with 17 by sitting it well out clear of the brakes etc? The last of the numbers for the tyre found earlier are the load rating and this needs to be equal or higher than spec.

I think you could probably use an adapter plate to space the wheel accordingly and bolt that to your hub then the ill-fitting Merc wheel to that, Lipu style... Not a problem as long as the outer edge is no further out than the standard tyre when inflated.
