I need to top-up the engine oil in my 2005 4200. What engine oil should I use? Service isn't due for another four months, so it's a trip to Halfords for me!

Only measure oil level when engine fully warmed and idling.........add slowly.......Shell helix 5w-40 fully synthetic....and only this oil......its OEM recommended!

Unless you know whats in there you should re fill fully with one brand only, ie don't blend.

Shell Helix is a very short-lived oil as well, short runs and / or spirited driving and it'll soon be shot; so I'd agree with Safrane and replace rather than topping up unless you know the history of the oil in your particular car.

Thanks for all the advice and guidance. What's the general view regarding oil consumption? The oil level is right on the Min mark on the dip stick. I service the car every year and up until Dec last year I was doing circa 700 miles per month. From Jan this year to present, this has been reduced to just local trips and the occasional blast down to Brighton! Would I be right in saying that local short trips burn more oil then long motorway trips??

Also I don't believe I have an oil leak, as I always park in the same spot and regularly check the ground under the car.

Should I be worried about this? I guess I should top it up and start monitoring it more closely.

Hi Omar, the 4200/GS is prescribed as using half a litre for every 1K kilometres (more if adverse driving conditions) and the volume between min and max on the dip-stick is one litre, so it wouldn't be at all unusual to be on the min if you're using the car and haven't been due a service for a while.

I have to say guys that my 4200 which is higher than average miles uses no oil between changes and I do drive her in a sporting manor.

Hi
What's people's view on 10w60 in a 4200? My oil light still comes on when hot and thought this may help

I use 10W60 in mine here in NZ as that's what Maserati recommend.
When in the UK I used 5W40.
On hot days here my pressure reading at idle is a lot higher.
My car has a new pump and sender unit.
Your issue sounds to me more like the sender unit.

Thanks, had a new unit fitted but not checked yet with new oil

May go with 5w40, euro car parts have 30% off today so 10lt of she'll helix for just over £41

Thank you for this thread. Most timely as I'm also having an oil change this week and have been unhappy with 5w40.
I'm having the oil non return valve replaced to overcome left bank idle noise hopefully.
Before you go oil shopping, check your owner's manual. I think it says 11.5 litres capacity.

Never more than 7.5 L.
Do not overfill what ever you do and make sure she is nice and hot when you check the level.
