Can anyone tell me who manufactures the OEM clutch for a 4200 please. I was quoted £702 plus vat for the kit and £21 plus vat for the spigot bearing at the main dealers yesterday.

That sounds about right Phil.....Have you tried Eurospares they may be cheaper.......Not sure who manufactures them......Also Dick Lovett, the Maserati deler in Swindon are pretty good at coming in cheaper so ma be worth a call and speaking to Paul who comes on here now and again.

You can't buy the clutch from any other manufacturer as its licensed to Maserati only, £702 is a good price.

You know something in the back of my mind said it was. My company is a Valeo main stockist so I am going to investigate if they will sell me one. I'll report back.

Incidentally Lancasters Colchester yesterday quote £702 plus vat, Eurospares are £745 plus vat, some £43 plus vat more expensive.

Phil, if you can get one direct I'll be amazed. People have looked into it in the past as the same part used to cost around £350. We'd all be very happy if you could source them at decent price but it's a long shot.

Good luck with cracking the Valeo secret, it should be illegal to prevent a free market just like servicing and the car software but I guess that is the Italians for you...

The re-lined clutch is done and awaiting someone to fit it, this I likely to be me unless someone else needs it sooner. It is available for just £35 for whoever wants to be the forum guinea pig?

I think the clutch issue for the 4200/GS is less about the friction plate and more about the pressure plate. I've just had mine replaced as the fingers in the pressure plate failed. The friction plate wasn't that worn, even though it was far from new. I believe the price quoted is for both pressure plate and friction plate - the pressure plate will likely be the larger cost IMO. Apparently if the release bearing is in good enough condition just the seals can be replaced - about £70 or so in comparison to c.£300 for a new bearing. I cannot see the release bearing being included in the quoted price, so factor one of those in as well in case it needs replacing (mine did!)

Loz had talked about relining one, not sure where its at

P

Yep, done, and all new springs (plate only) wait for it.............£30!

If you could find someone to refurbish the cover, new contact face and tangs, this would be well worth doing.

You could always just risk it and use the same clutch cover but circa 1 in 5 of the clutches we hear about are collapsed clutch cover tangs.

What we need to do is get Phil (our resident mechanic in Somerset) to take on the changes as I dont think the indies and dealer will want to put their name to it, worth a try though, if mine goes ill be the Guinea pig.

Matt - just so i understand, only the friction plate is relined. To date all of the other items (pressure plate, spiggot bearing, release bearing) would all need to be bought new? So what's the approx saving for relining?

Sorry if that makes little sense, I know b--ger all about what goes on under the bonnet.

You are correct of course, Valeo will not sell one to the aftermarket under any circumstances. Restricted copyright I'm told. Sorry guys, but you already knew that!

Anyone up on copyright/patent/trademark legislation? I'm sure there are EU precedents in place that could be cited to force the issue with Maserati/Valeo...

I don't think the might of Maserati or Valeo would have left any legal loopholes I'm afraid. Dead end to a realistically priced clutch kit.

So you can buy a genuine Valeo clutch in France for Euro 549 circa £470 (no thrust bearing though).................

Beats £702 PLUS VAT from the dealer or £745 PLUS VAT from Eurospares.
How come the Frogs can have a cheap clutch then, surely we are all part of Europe now?

very simple answer - it's a used clutch! Who in their right mind would fit this to their car??!
