4200 Alternator Change

Hi Guys, the battery charging gauge on my dash used to give a very steady 14 volts but it is suddenly down to 12 volts. The belt seems fine, but the alternator mounted above the V is in line with the bonnet opening and is showing signs of surface corrosion. Has anybody had a similar issue diagnosed or changed the alternator themselves. If so is there a recommended replacement part number available or any instructions available. I have never worked on fuel injection before, so a little help would be much appreciated.

I would check the voltage by other means first, just incase its the gauge and nothing is wrong with the alternator at all.
If the alternator has failed, and the running voltage is 12V, the battery would be dead in no time!

Hi Guys thanks for the input, the rain eventually stopped so a quick check revealed, battery disconnected 12.56 volts, battery connected 12.50 volts (presumably the Navtrak plus other memory devices), engine switched on 14.60 volts, so maybe a false alarm after all. Either way very disconcerting so far from home (Silverstone Classic, did any one attend). Steve

I guess it must be a bit like the engine warning light that comes on every so often, then goes out if you control/alt/delete the battery isolation switch and back on again. 10 years in and it still causes my little heart (or is that wallet) to flutter every time it does it. Steve

Those figures sound fine. My gauge sometimes reads correctly, a bit like a stopped watch!

My voltage gauge is exactly like this. Fairly convinced all of the gauges are advisory as best. The fuel gauge is more of a corner tightness gauge in reality

Oh be fair! The fuel gauge at least confirms you've siphoned 80% of your salary into hydrocarbons!

Oh! And the tachometer is *spot on* ;)
