3200gt Buying advice

am new here and this would be my second Italian in my stable, I just finished bringing a 2001 Alfa Spider to full glory and need another challange.

Have looked in detail at a 2001 3200GT with 113K kilometer on the clockk a neighbor bought a year ago but has not had the time to work on so now its my turn.

Inspected the car and fairly clean and now trying to figure out what I would need to pur into it for an offer. As the last service was in 2019 and only 1000Km drivien since then I figure I still need to plan for the cam belt and even the chains due to the KM and I am budgeting for the water pump just in case. I have a full stemped sevice book but no reciepts on what was done.

am aware the wishbones are a cost factor, looking under the car it is extreemly clean however the bushes are showing wear (particualrly rear) which may not get me TÜV (MOT in UK) .

The rear Bushes look the worst and I understand they are part of the whishbone and are sold as one piece (around 1200@) but i have seen powerflex bushes sold on line for the car. is this a doable option?

whishbones both front an back upper and lower look new, but due to sitting the bushes are going or gone. i attached photos for your opinion, never dlet with Maserati before, just Alfa, Porsche, and Brit cars.

have two more questions:
  1. Have read a few posts but have not collected enough detail on Timing chains. It is about time will do this myself. has anyone done and that and what am I in for?
  2. in an attached Photo Is the baggy leather in the door normal or is this due to age or mosture?
many thanks for any feed back.

Welcome to the forum.

Most of the pictures you posted are of the ball joint rubber bellows, if the ball joints are in good condition, you can just replace these, there are several posts about this using a BMW part.

The bushes (only your first picture) are a flan block design, in that the rubber is not in shear when the arm moves, there is a metal on metal sleeve inside. For this reason options like power flex are not a great idea, they are solid enough already. You can buy replacement bushes from Eurospares and Superformance, you just need the right skills and a large hydraulic press to replace them.

Slightly off-topic, but can you post some pics of the ALFA?

If you need a challenge you can do my 99 Zoe Spider instead. ;)

The Alfa is gorgeous. If you can pull that off, not even sure why you'd hesitate on the 3200!

Hi
I would check the end float on the engine
Just pulled my 55k mile engine apart and crank was chewing the block!
The replacement 28 k engine was already out os spec.!

Timing chains look like quite an adventure with double over head cam
I am currently rebuilding bottom end but ducking top end at the moment part due to complexity but also cost of parts …

let me know how it goes, I am budgeting for the worst and hoping for the best. So far i have not found a direct like to anyone who has done the chains. Not worth the purchase if I have to pay someone else. I tend to buy cars that do not need body work as that is my weak point, but after doing engine work on the V6 busso i am a bit wary of these chains. Granted it it not a side mounted motor which should make life a bit easier......or not

Any one have any feedback on the saging door panel leather? was this not taugnt origanaly? it is a cream leather interior and I need to do a recolor but this is a lower cost DIY job. my achlees heel is always removing door pannels.... wit excetion of the Alfa I always **** up. Paying a Salter at 80€ an hour is not my bag

It had to have been taut...not sure how/why that would have delaminated like that. Water infiltration? Obv. no 3200s here, but can't imagine there isn't a door card swap you couldn't work out...or some glue...

Have you got the manual which goes step by step through the full engine dismantle / rebuild? Provides full breakdown on how to do timing/ chain, I can send you copy if you send me private message with email. Chains off is very straight forward they come off when you remove cyl. heads, it is resetting timing for double overhead cam that needs the care And couple of micrometer gauges but no special tools.

The other issue with spares is availability. I did check for chain and got advice from specialist as to need to do.Let me see if I can dig that out.
