Well I hope it doesn't have to, I have bought a new cover, don't want to have to remove the pulley to fit it

Mine neither, I don't think its supposed to?

The manual says to start with the pulley and then the cover.
Obviously, I tought I knew better than the manual and tried to get the cover first.
It would hit on the pulley and not come out so I had to remove the pulley first.

Beuau, is it possible your cover is broken at the bottom where it meets the pulley?

I removed the centre plastic cover yesterday without having removed the crank pulley. Afte reading here I checked it for damage, but there's no indications of such.

We also removed the crank pulley, timing belt and hydraulic tenstioner today. Work will continue next weekend I think as I've got the car stored away from home.

Many thanks for all the assistance and helpful tips in this thread!

I had already planned to replace the water pumpt and both tensioners for peace of mind, but cheers for the tip!

I replaced both the tensioner and the fixed pulley, both available, and easy enough to change. I also plan to replace my water pump on next belt change, although not for a couple years.

There is a belief that the engine was adjusted so as not to out perform the Ferrari models of the day. But I am not sure if this has been proved.

Acording to emblem website all Maseratis that they replaced the chains had the incorrect timing set from the factory.

Could be similar that the manual is wrong and the factory seting is the correct :)

It has been suggested, but it just seems such a *mad* way of dropping the power

I don't believe that for a second. They downplayed the figures is what i heard so as not to have a Maserati with more power than the then current 355 and later 360.

Rolling road print out which sort of back up that theory from my stock manual car.

Well I think there are pretty well known instances where the timing *was* wrong, but (as in all things) I tend towards Hanlon's Razor (never knew it was called that)

Incompetence, not deliberate action
