Yes its a good idea, I bought one as a donor

So far:
taken the heads
grille
tail lights
alternator and power steering
returned both throttle bodies to Dave and got a new one which means a I got a free-ish TB
both fuel pump assemblies

and that's the things just off the top of my head.

I imagine that *most* cars have more spent on maintenance than their purchase prices over their lifetimes....

Cheers Guys, I don't feel quite so much a fool now. I'm sure it will be fine in the long run. As to the amount spent on my new donor by the previous owner, I really can't understand it. Just as an example, He paid Graypaul well over £2000 for new discs & pads & £1500 for refurbishing the wheels & new Falken tyres. I'll certainly be using the tyres on my 4200 as the Pilot Sports are getting a little low. The Falkens are pristine & still have the little bobble bits on the treads.
Once again, thanks a lot, & with a three car (four car?) stable, I really should be making more of an effort in the forums.

We see it at ours regularly where the owners are very attached to their cars and spend near or over its value.

Is that wrong, of course not if it means something.

Bedsides we would all be divorced if that was the method of thinking
I’m by no means saying that I’ve not spent far too much on my 3200 too, I probably mistakenly assumed that the previous owner spent that 19k in one go!

It's a smart move i reckon, and agree, some of the previous bills with mine are truly baffling, £2500 for new knock sensors?

so easy to rack up a silly bill at a main dealer. I’m pretty certain I wouldn’t still have my 3200 if I had to take it to the main dealer for every item that needed sorting.

There’s a few things that can sound like tappets, confirm where the noise is coming from before you write it off.

It's not ridiculous (IMHO) to spend more than the value of the car on repairs (don't read this @conaero ) if (a) the car values themselves are ridiculously low (b) you like the car and (c) you plan to keep it for a while. But I don't understand these people who buy something, spend a lot of money and then just sell it on for what they paid in the first place.
Next time I'll sell on for what I paid!

Would never happen with me. As soon as I buy and maintain a car, my thinking is that money is totally written off and if i get anything back, that's a bonus.

Not a great thinking perhaps but it means that I'm happy to move on anytime. Unfortunately for the family, I reckon that equates to nearly £200k since arriving in UK 10 years ago!

I have the exact opposite strategy with property purchases fortunately. Although our Australia ones end up much like the cars.
