2009 Facelift Qoattroporte S vs Quattroporte GTS - What are the differences?

I don't disagree with most of the comments in favour of the GTS - I think it looks great with the darkened headlight surround and 'shadow line' trim. But in the interests of balance, the 'S' is also a great car in its own right.

I actually chose one rather than a GTS because it suited my needs better. I didn't want something that was too stiff-legged all the time, so it's nice to be able to switch into comfort mode around town when I have passengers. Also, I didn't want the even louder exhaust that would annoy the neighbours when I have an early start. The 'S' sounds great to me and is startling enough! It's also just as quick and, importantly, has the uprated six-pot brakes.

In short, it can cruise in comfort or turn much more aggressive and sporty at the press of a button. I think I have the best of both worlds....Or maybe I'm just getting too old!

The S is a great car and I do know that the GTS rides a lot harder especially in sport mode so best drive both to see what suits your needs......

I love my S and the noise is great. I guiltily confess I am sometimes tempted towards a GTS simply for the noise but the harsh ride puts me off. Like others have said being able to firm up the ride and sharpen the gear changes at the push of a button is a pretty good compromise.
Let's face it so long as you have the big 4.7 V8 who cares?

Ewan,

I don't think this is a GTS 4.7, looks to me like a 4.2 GT Automatic? The 4.2 Auto (QP or GT) are not a drivers car as they kick down whenever you boot it - even in sport mode. Gearchange in Sport Mode (IMO) should only ever be from the paddles or at redline.

Arnie

Hi
Can someone enlighten me about the kickdown when booting it? Mine does this and I've no complaints as that's kind of what I'd expect when flooring the pedal with an auto. I don't recall if this also happens when I'm in manual mode. I'll check next time I'm out and about.
In a manual car. I'd downshift and then stomp. I guess the difference is that you expect to accelerate in the current gear until you hit the red line or unless you downshift manually?

I guess what I'm after is an explanation of "driveability/drivers car" and what I'm missing out on!
Perhaps it's just one of those things you need to experience rather than be told about.

"it has the"Twin pipe exhaust chrome plated" instead of the "dual oval pipe exhaust system with black stainless steel and electronically controlled bypass valves".

And that makes the interstellar difference between the two cars and why it's worth holding out for the GTS......the S will always lack that je ne sais quoi!

Cheers Wattie

I have a lovely 4.7 S, and only miss two things: The noise on demand and the front grill; harsher ride not so much. Grill is an easy fix, but does anyone have experience with retrofitting the valved exhausts? Don't think constant loud is for me, but the switch sure is tempting..

Boxes are a straight swap I believe. Hooking up valves is not exactly hard.

I prefer the 4.7S as it is a little more understated (no carbon fibre etc), goes just as well in real world terms- still 430 hp... sounds fantastic- and twin rear pipes look better than the ovals imo!

I bought my 4.7S after driving a 4.2 GTS for long weekends in Scotland, and the ride on the 4.7S is I think superior. It still firms up nicely enough in Sport mode for spirited driving ;)

I am quite happy with my Exec GT - comfort and ability. Exactly what you need when you are 102 years of age
Although I have not tried the other variants
