Certainly a few surprises in the top 10 - the Lotus Elite, not the most elegant and the Alfetta, which I actually really like but seems a bit out of its league. Lots of nice cars, lots also missing….but then again the ratio they used is pretty random so this is not really more than elevated click bait ;)

You see, for me, beauty is derived from art, not science. You can see that from the data, it's learned what one thing is and applied to any number of cars. The art is in the detail.

Edit: the list, the feature, the reason for it being, is all about the science. The data science.

I buy Art because it makes me smile ... and draw parallels with cars.

I am amazed at 2 ommissions - BMW M1 and the BMW 635 CSI as probably 2 of my top 10 favourite cars.

Let the debate begin.................... A few Masers in there and some are no-brainers, but some are complete pigs IMO ( 70's Lotus Breadvan Elite in the top 10?)

Seems an odd basis for evaluation:

"By measuring and comparing the distance between different set points on the cars. In total, we plotted 14 different points on each front-on view of the cars, for example, the headlights, the wing mirrors and the corners of the windscreen. Using that data, we then computed and compared the distance ratios between these points, to reveal how closely their design followed the proportions of the golden ratio. "

That’s really interesting, the golden ratio can certainly be applied to architecture, photography and furniture but I’ve never thought about cars. I think it’s a bit tricky to assess when there are multiple reference points. But once you understand the concept of the golden ratio as being 1:1.618, you start spotting why certain things are so pleasing to the eye.

Ha ha!!!!!!!!!

Of “all” the cars I have ever owned or own, nothing bar nothing has garnered more positive comments and waving etc than the Gold Elite. I have “wound the window down” more times to chat to people in that car than anything. Never had a negative comment.

it literally is totally bonkers!!

I am 50 (WTF?!) and loved Space 1999 as a kid in the 70’s and the Elite has always been for me one of the landing craft… odd I know..

I love Subaru’s so am defo a subscriber to the “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” and “function over form” schools

I'm calling b*llocks on this.

Golden ratio's my ar5e.

It just doesn't work, many moons ago I went out with an art student and remember her telling me about this Golden Ratio, I argued that this ratio was based on someone's point of view about what makes a good picture. Which in itself makes it subjective.
Subjectivity and science don't mix. Science is proof of something until someone proves it to be false.

So looking at the cars in that line up, well, lets just say there are some stinkers! (Lotus Elite!!!)

As much as I'd love an Enzo, or a LaFerrari, they ain't no lookers. Stunning in their own way, but beautiful? No.

A Miura being down in 9th! after an Alfetta! :lol2:

An Indy being higher than a Ghibli? You're having a laugh!

A GTS being lower than, well, most of the list. As mentioned. Click bait.

From the data set the low shark nose and low-down eyes doesn't fit the data, hence the low listing.

By the same token, Asalia Yusopova has freckles, which according to the data, would be a negative. However...

An XKSS as good looking as an E Type? Let’s say it’s just as well there is a swear filter on here because that’s a load of bolloxs.

Is the Ferrari Monza really number one…. !!!!!!……It is far from beautiful…
Saw the Monza (SP2) in the flesh when collecting my GT. it’s an impressive and interesting object but not the most beautiful car ever by a long stretch. 8903789038

Race car wise, if there over 800 kilos there going to be slow!

Dave
This was all about looks as opposed to speed or power, and generally I would agree with you. However, No2 on the list was homologated at 960kg and certainly isn’t slow. I know as I’ve got one and it’s got this right behind my head to remind me!
