I was at HR Owen's parts department earlier and the chap in front of me was picking up a nut for his QP. The cost - a cool £85! For a nut no more than one inch long. It was something to do with the transmission. Are Maserati taking the Michael or what...

depends how urgent you are, i needed a pipe for my alfa, it was £50 from the dealer, and im sure i could of found one for under a tenner but my car was off the road so i didnt mind paying the premium, annoying but sometimes its easier to pay the premium than be without a car til you find one

Have you over a barrel, only one supplier, pay it or put an older car off the road, they only want new cars or max 3yrs old coming through their doors

It does put people of older versions of the marque though... Perhaps that explains the post warranty depreciation...

Before the internet and the last gasps of British manufacturing there was an alladins cave of engineering supplies in every town. Over the years these have gradually closed down and now you even struggle to find material online. You could walk into these places and drop a bolt, nut or split pin or clinch spiral on the counter and they would toddle off out the back for a few minutes then holler through "How many do you want?"

I won't be beaten by these bastardos And I'll root out the bits I need somewhere but it is getting ever more difficult to do...

Yup, we had one across the road near us. I remember walking in with a little regulator box from a mate's BMW motorbike which wouldn't start. He knew this part was likely to be at fault because it had let him down in the same way before. Plonked it down on the counter and the chap serving said, 'ah, Bosch regulator, that'll be £12 please'. My mate was flabbergasted, he paid BMW over EUR €100 for it the year before.

That very useful motor factors is now another effing estate agents (no offence, Dem). Just what we need, our fifteenth estate agents on the High Street.

We still have an old style motor factors in Towcester. The old guy behind the counter is amazing, put a car part on the counter and he knows what it is, what it fits and what alternative is available. He does the same with bolts, nuts etc over the years he has saved me a fortune

Does he open late? I often pop over Tuesday after work, to visit my nephew.
