Alternator issues

Just thought I would post my experience of alternator issues and the benefits of a scanner. During my trip in Germany at end of September I had an alternator issue that locked me in the gear I was currently in. Thanks to Zep and Matt we discovered that my alternator was putting out a high voltage occasionally and gradually shutting down all the in car computers starting with the gearbox. Cutting a very long story short I was able to drive for 3 days and returning to UK using Zep scanner resetting all the faults every couple of hours. A couple of times i reached a full house on the dashboard but was able to recover and reset the faults and return home. Thanks Zep and Matt.

Had exactly that issue with my GT. The HP6 locks in gear (either 3rd or 5th) when it gets over voltage.

SO have you changed your alternator Stevo? I'd imagine they are a part shared with other maques. It also would probably have a detachable rectifier/regualtor section that can be changed instead of the nause of changing the whole alternator. They are power electronics that do fail after a while.

For any future readers ignition off and on in clear it for a short period. But it's not good

He had a Bosch refurbished unit on exchange. It’s the only way to be sure and cost effective solution

Do you see many failing Matt or is just a case of GTs getting older now and items reaching the end of their useful life?

It took a reset from the scanner as he had quite a lot of codes from various ECUs.

Interesting. Perhaps more serious than the issues I had. It would behave after a restart, until it stopped.....

As we all know on modern cars with so many control units and modules voltage is very sensitive indeed.
Also why so many batteries fail prematurely.

Very impressive to, more than the number you get turning on ignition at start up. Even the door computer fault came up

Somewhat to my surprise, when I changed the battery in Mrs C's Giulietta last week it lit up like a Christmas tree. All the old favourites about ESC, ABS and so on. Some new and exciting entries from PAS un-available as well as TMPS and DNA.

All cleared after a spirited drive and some resets
