Ok, not one for off topic threads but this insomnia thing is getting silly now.

My mother in law said to me that she suffers the same problem when she got over 50.

So, how many others are struggling with this and what are you doing to try and rectify it?

Me, I start drifting off early about 9:30, then bedtime at 10:30, I sort of come round eventually going off only to wake at 3am…watch the clock for an hour then get up, watch telly for an hour then back off to sleep around 5am…having to wake at 7am feeling totally knackered.

It’s been going on for about 4 years now and I really need to do something about it.

Am I alone?
Nopes tried it all mate , reckon at least you got another 10-15 years minimum ahead of you , if your anything like me ..............I squeeze an extra hour or two by having a couple of beers each night , fine out here in SS , but at home would probably mean after a week of it your are probably over the driving limit each morning , until the whole ugly cycle starts again best of luck mate ..................other than pills ..............and i dont do pills cant think of any other way .....................retirement didnt even help in my case

I 'd say a more relaxed atmosphere work life has to be the best remedy if there is one , but running your own business and being as hands on as you are , you will never fully relax , im a list person by nature , and my mind never switches off until that list is fully ticked off .................kitchen fitting work there was always a million and one things to do , and well south sudan is just a mind blowing basket case full of frustration , maybe im my own worst remedy

Sorry to hear this Matt and things like this can really be quite debilitating also affecting you, your family and all around you. It is good to recognise and accept it as that is of course the first stage towards change.

I never often go to bed or sleep before 12 unless I'm shattered and might power off way before on a rare occasion. I suspect it might be likely your work/business is a high contender for some if not all of your issues. I'm one of life's thinkers and my brain hardly ever switches off. I find films and watching podcasts actually related to the things I often find myself thinking off has helped me.

I don't go to bed unless I'm tired enough to sleep and bed is for sleep. I'll not eat, drink or do anything other than sleep in bed mainly. If I'm ever struggling to sleep or want to sleep I've got some noise cancelling closed headphones and I'll put on a couple of hour podcast or something which will send me off at some point regardless of my state.

What has helped me a great deal is to aim to start finding answers to questions. To worry less about stuff I can't control. To be more accepting of the things I can't control. The art of saying no to people is important and trying not to spread yourself too thin or to take on too much. Live life on your terms and not for or on behalf of others.

I expect it isn't just one thing but a few things rolling into one bigger issue. I've watched a lot the last 3 years about all sorts of stuff. Wanting to be better, more knowledgeable also understanding the brain, people, life, society and all sorts. It helps me to find some answers or even some solace with some kind of resolution to questions my brain is asking.

I'm not a big medicine man or fan of remedies to resolve issues especially when you haven't always had them. Normally there is a root source cause of any issue. It often feels further additives will mask or maybe increase complexity rather than finding or resolving the root source cause of any issues.
It is just searching, keeping open minded, a little creative thinking and I'm sure you wil nail it. You are a very decent person, a clever creative thinker and will likely face bigger issues in the future also likely have faced bigger issues previously.

I have watched a fair bit of Andrew Huberman and his studies of the brain are quite interesting. If we do certain things at certain times we can often face uphill battles and decrease our chance of success. I'm no idiot so if I can understand what these are and what is good to do and when also what is bad to do with when then your chances of positive outcomes are massively increased.

He says a lot about getting sunlight into your eyes first thing in the morning. Reducing blue light late at night. Not eating too late. There are many things most pretty simple and easy to employ. Check him out.

I rarely have issues sleeping and although I often don't sleep many hours it feels like the sleep is deep and with good quality.

Whole heartedly agree Rockits with the sunlight thing ..............which could just be the reason im so at home in Africa , wit a lot less ills than in the UK , my water intake here is 4 times greater than in the UK by habit , even the bottled water tastes so much better here , like you listening to useless podcasts my favourites of which does the trick are Ricky Gervais Karl Pilkington and Steve Merchant ................brainless listening ...................just wish i could painlessly drop the fags

I've also stopped drinking alcohol.....not for everyone granted....tried to reduce bad fats and sugar but sugar is tough as it is everywhere and a silent killer IMHO. Trying to reduce processed foods and eat more whole foods with less process along their often huge ridiculous journeys....again very hard to do.

I also don't care much what others think or say. I'm my own judge and jury, am not greedy, don't abuse or hurt people so I try to lie my head on the pillow at night clear in conscious and content I'm a decent honest person. It all helps I feel.

If all these things were increased I suspect I'd have some issues sleeping. Modern life in various ways has made our lives better and in many ways far far worse. We used to get food to fork much quicker, more localised and without so much process. I'm not a big fan of history and like to focus on today and tomorrow but keep an eye on history to make sure we haven't forgotten the things that were better, right or useful. Invariably we often do forget.

Light sleeper or heavy sleeper I feel is genetics.
I'm a heavy sleeper, can sleep anywhere and can simply 'turn off'.
I'm asleep minutes after hitting the pillow.
I even enjoy a strong coffee before bed!
When I was a kid, I used to have a traditional wind-up bell alarm clock suspended above my head on the bed room light pull cord to wake me up, the loud tickling sound put me to sleep even quicker.
My two kids are just the same as me, much to the annoyance of the Mrs, who is the opposite, a very light sleeper who struggles to go to sleep.

@rockits mentioned Andrew Huberman. Good mention - the guy's a genius. My wife's a big fan. She sleeps atrociously, but rates his thinking highly. Well worth investigating.

One thing is consistent and clear in my research also findings. Knowledge is power......real power. Enrich yourself and your brain. It is amazing what you can find, learn, understand and achieve with an open mind, an insatiable desire to find also answer questions.

It seems we are pretty aligned on many things. I suspect on many things also form a very small minority. I have no idea why though as cannot work that part out.
I agree, totally! Though I similarly couldn't explain, offhand.

...And I also wonder how loud Adam snores?

I do find a fair bit odd as I have great clarity on many things I see but so much still doesn't add up.

Maybe the snoring is not the problem

Taking Magnesium before bed works well for me.

I didn't know about improving sleep (could part explain why mine's generally improved, although it hasn't worked for Mr RR) but it seems to have done wonders for our aches and pains

For a number of reasons, I decided to try one of these:
It's a fitness tracker, but focuses very deliberately on sleep.

I got a second hand one from ebay (It's a PITA having to get the sizing stuff, but I have a kit now if anyone wants to try it) and while it's early days, it is very revealing in terms of how your sleep was and, in fact, how you can improve it.

Just sharing
