I find it difficult to understand why so much praise is being placed on someone who’s never finished a GP higher than 9th and so many insults levelled at a 7 time world champion. I’ve been involved in motorsport for 25 years and if you’d asked me if there was any racism in it I’d have said no. But over the last year I’ve come to realise that’s not the case.

Willy T Ribbs’ career wasn’t that long ago and may have been in USA but it paints a picture most of us white men can’t imagine.

I watched this on Netflix a few months ago (called "Uppity")... Very enjoyable watch, provoked a lot of emotions. Fair ***** to Willy T he's a strong individual to achieve what he did.

Where did that come from? You're getting racism confused with not gelling with someone because of how they conduct themselves, like Raheem Sterling, who the **** gets a tattoo of a gun on his calf after his father was shot? Always the victim....The mind boggles....

“Mr Chip”

Hamilton gets a whole load a **** from all quarters including the press that other champions never received and the only difference is he’s not a white bloke.

For example? I disagree here, the **** he gets is not because of his colour, it's because of what he says and does.

But all the other drivers say and do similar things, why does he get singled out?

Because someone winning every race is boring and so people want to find fault. Hamilton is amazing, what a talent, but he comes across as aloof, full of himself, and isn’t easy for most people to relate to. He leads a life which is elite and privileged and most people just think he’s got it easy as a result. I said before that what he needs is a PR team that make him more normal. It’s the opposite of why people love James Hunt. He was a drinking, smoking, womaniser and ordinary people love the idea of that.

Most viewers, myself included, have been excited to see a young guy get a change and do a stellar job of the opportunity until his team made a pigs ear of it for him. He’ll get disqualified too as by putting on Bottas’s front tyres, he went over the weekend allowed allocation.

I have maximum respect for Hamilton’s race craft and skill but far less of his virtue signalling nonsense.

Hunt was about as aloof, elite and privileged as you could get!

Schumacher won just about every race.

And many developed a dislike for Schumacher as well although he managed to remain a bit more grounded and normal, doing things like playing charity football matches and the like while Hamilton hangs out at Tommy Hilfiger runway shows with Drake.

You may not agree, clearly, but the amount of noise around Hamilton tells it’s own story. He may be the nicest guy ever but that’s not what people think hence why he need an image PR push.

Although he came from a privileged background he certainly didn't come across as aloof when I once met him in a paddock; he was relaxed and happy to chat, though rumour has it that he wasn't too approachable in the half hour before a race. I think many of the truly great drivers have had a tendency to appear aloof and perhaps that comes from 'zoning in' when there's work to be done.

Hamilton is an astonishing driver who apparently does find time for charity work so he can't be all bad, but I do agree with Outrun that his PR needs work.

I'm glad Checo won, but Mrs MLC's singing the national anthem was errr.... Let's just say that I'm glad she's got a day job.

All il say on Hamilton is that i really dont like him as a person, but fully respect him as a driver.
So happy to see Checo win a race finally, what a legend! I hope he gets a drive next year, as he is an absolute talent without a doubt.
George did everything right today, and Merc screwed it for him and Bottas. such a shame that the fairy tale didnt quite happen, but so glad he showed what he is capable of, and his incredible fighting spirit.

Well that was a roller coaster of a race, Russell did really well and showed he has a racers mentality. It was horrible to see the team cock things up and then the bad luck of a puncture but even then he came out and raced hard for 9th. That said I was glad those Checo win, what else does Red Bull need to see if they want a race to get points, last to first is a great result regardless of circumstances

Bet Hamilton is not too happy this morning? Things might not go all his own way next season with a new team mate.

I don’t think it’s PR I think it’s the press and the whole industry. It’s the middle aged white establishment, it’s us lot and I genuinely believe whether it’s conscious or not the **** he gets is racist and it’s not warranted.

The thing is that the press makes out he’s unpopular, people here say he’s unpopular and don’t like him but go find an 18 year old and they all think he’s amazing, he’s not unpopular but the press pick on him, we pick on him, the sport picks on him. Search for articles about him being 7 time world champion and almost all of them are about why he’s not that good.

He is one of only 3 world champions who have genuinely bypassed the usual level of partisanship that exists among fans but again the press doesn’t reflect that.

I think he dresses like a tit but then I think most people under 40 dress like tits. But Schumacher wore some terrible clothes and the media didn’t comment on it.

I didn’t believe this until this year but since he started talking about racism it’s actually become obvious he’s right. The TV and press was full of F1 establishment saying he shouldn’t be saying it. Either he was wrong and there was no racism (they’re all white) or that F1 wasn’t the place for it (many of them campaigned for issues during their time as drivers).

The big thing I think we all should take from the Black Lives Matter movement is that instead of immediately denying that something has a racist element we should actually think about it first.

Watch the Willy T Ribbs documentary. It was 1991 when he became the first black guy to compete in the Indy 500. We’re not talking about 1950s or 1960s America. As Fifty said it’s an amazing story that brings all manner of emotions and makes you think.
