Anyone know what size hex bit the gearbox drain plug is on a Gransport? just about to start my winter maintenance prog, and gearbox oil and filter change is first up, got the oil, and new filter and 'o' ring, the end of the old filter looks quite old, hope its not going to give me too much grief!

Beware the filter, worst job I've ever done on this car. I had to drill it out in the end. I had a mechanic mate suggest a corkscrew arrangement - that might actually work, but by then it was too late for me. Hope it goes well for you.

Is it the same on QP duoselect? Was going to do this one day before work
Yes. The difficulty in removal appears to be whether the filter has recently been out and/or whether you have the newer style of filter. With the gasket closer to the top. The older type are known to be sods:

Thankfully, mine came out quite easily but worth having a spare to hand just in case.
At least it was noted recently as being the same filter used in a Lambo Gallardo.
A small saving but a saving none the less and more likely to be in stock.
Maser # 182416
Lambo # 086301517

In both instances the gasket is sold separately. # 182119.

Judging by the look of the end of the old filter, it hasn't been out for a while, (must check the service history to see when it was supposedly last done )
and I bought the Lambo one, it will be this weekends job I expect.

Haha I know that story....
Funny how the filter on mine comes out very easily since I’ve been servicing it!
Make sure you try to get the old one moving by turning / twisting it back and forth with a pipe wrench or similar, hopefully it will come out in one or two pieces!

That would be too much to expect!

okay - so I need to get the filter before even putting on the overalls. Have pencilled in Tuesday for local garage to replace gearbox oil. Might push back on that until a new filter arrives.

So that went better than expected, old filter came ou intact with very little effort, so has obviously been changed before although it is the old type, has a manufacture date of 06/12 so that figures, now the quandary, on the recommendation of someone I bought the Lamborghini Gallardo filter, as apparently they are the same, well, they are not quite, as you will see from the pics, the hole in the side of the filter housing is in a slightly different aspect to the one that came out. So, will this matter, it will mean that the holes in the filter and gearbox out will not line up exactly, options are,
clean and refit old filter,?
modify hole in new filter?
Return new filter to eurospares and wait for maserati filter to come into stock?
Oh and one other small thing, I cannot for the life of me find the location of the fill plug, can someone please point me in the right direction! Is it behind the rubber cover that seems to be over most of the gearbox?

I spent a bit of time looking at these pictures and was pretty sure the orientation was slightly off, but this proves it. I’d refit the old one myself, any restriction in oil flow will be a bad thing.

The fill plug is on the drivers side of the casing, about half way up, inline with the exhaust mount. It should be at the rear of the rubber cover.

Here is a pic with pencil pointing to centre of holes to get a better idea. Old filter is in the dishwasher, I mean parts washer as we speak

Given that the hole aligns with a hole in the gearbox casing, to my eye this is not a comparable part.

I hope your missus doesn’t need the parts washer today

:p

I’d fit old filter to be sure, don’t want to starve the gearbox
Filler Point is a pain to reach, in middle of pic below. Directly under cable clip

Surely you aren’t driving the car in this weather...?
In which case, I’d be inclined to order an updated filter proper, and just wait it out ‘til it arrives and fit that.....;)
I have to concur with Zep & Greg; that Lamborghini part isn’t quite the ticket.....:clapps:

Refit the original as it will be nice and clean.
A little white grease on the o ring and job done will come out easy in the future.

One further thing to add don’t over tighten the plug, it’s very easy to strip the threads. Tighten till resistant then quarter turn, no more.

Good spot - looks like one of pals has got himself a free filter!

Old one will be going back in with new 'o' ring and plenty of silicone grease applied, the state of the oil also surprised me, very black, not what I was expecting for gearbox oil. Now anybody got a 2004 Gallardo and need a gearbox oil filter? I know of one going cheap!
