That';; be a good job when done, do you have mitre saw, chisels etc?

Unfortunately, I do not have the space for many tools. Using a smallcupboard under the stairs that I have "tetris-style" packed with tools.

I am a little chuffed. Whilst on conference calls this morning (where all I had to do was listen), I managed to fix our sagging front door, re-position the front door lock, and re-position the lock on the loo as well.

Particularly happy with my use of a Car Scissor Jack(!) to prop-up the end of front door to right it back to its proper position!!
That's an old joiner's trick with doors. Use a hammer and a chisel to lift the door with your foot whilst you get the first screws in. My dad showed me that. He could also put putty into a new pane with both hands at the same time. Skills sadly lost.

There's got to be YouTube videos of this somewhere. As you say, it'd be sad for such skills to be lost.

One advantage of lockdown is being forced to do a bit of DIY. It's actually quite satisfying.

D4mn right, Ross. I've also re-hung one door (using the 'flexi-wedge') method and have one more to do. One of the joys of a timber-framed house is that it never stays still for long. Also got some power, lights and heating to the back patio, repaired and repainted the front doors and windows (work starting on the back in the coming [insert time here], replaced / fitted some new extractor fans in one bathroom and the downstairs dunny and made a plan for a new front fence / drive / gate configuration that will be way beyond my talents. I'd hoped to fix up the shed, which rotted while I wasn't paying attention, but that again requires more talent (or patience) than I offer.

A lot of this stuff is pretty quick and can be wedged in between calls, but much of it is because the weekends are so much less hectic.

A DIY query, if you dont mind. Seems.like we've definitely the knowledge on here.

Front door is an old Victorian hardwood painted in a satin finish paint.

It was dipped and then repainted, so it had a nice finish.

Paint is now flaking off in some areas.

How do I repaint it whilst maintaining a flat finish. As if I remove the flaky paint, then repaint, those areas will be lower than those where the paint is solid and not removed.

The quickest way to a decent solution would be appreciated (rather than the long and painful way to a perfect finish!).

The house is Victorian so nothing is straight nor perfect!

Thanks

Rub it down, use a medium grit paper to smooth off those edges. The GAMI (Get a man in) method would be to send them off for a paint stripper dip. You could use Nitromors, a blow lamp and scraper to get the old paint off. Used to love doing that as a kid for my Dad. The chemicals didn't do me any harm...

As above.

With a door that gets lots of weather and sun you need to rub down an paint yearly.

Do it like that and you will end up qith a mirror shine like N10.

I would for speed and ease of working ,remove said door and place on tressles , remove door furniture ,and take to it with a belt sander, for any mouldings it's hand sanding , apply knotting sealer to any knots prime and undercoat accordingly , being a front door you should probably rehang it before top coating and replacing furniture ,hope that helps

Morning all.
Feeling good this morning which surprised me and looking forward to another days graft on the house.
Thankfully having good neighbors around me the grass will now be cut and the hedges soon to be done.
I'm not going to rush that neighbor as he's 73.
Going to be another scorcher so plenty of fluids needed :)

Morning all. WTF? I woke myself up by sneezing at about 0430 this morning and appear to have the mother of all colds. Or my hayfever has ganged up on me. Might take a day off!

Stay well, everyone

Well sneezing and runny nose is not one of the symptoms so I'm pretty confident :)

Not the usual symptoms agreed , but shows you immune system is below par , be extra careful and vigilant whilst your down mate , alternatively try some hydroxichloriquine .........works for Trump lol :saifi:
