Everything goes in cycles. To think we will not have high inflation again is to forget this. It will happen.

Of course it will, just as we will get high interest rates again, in fact one of the main policy mistakes most central banks made over the last decade was to not get interest rates closer to historic norms when they had the chance even if it reduced real GDP growth for a while. I just don't see high inflation in the next few years.

Let's think of genuinely clever politicians?

Actually I know I'll get * for this but Gordon Brown, a genuinely intelligent man (PhD) cot caught up in the 2008 global collapse IMHO brains wise....

Blair - Charisma over insight bit we had 10 years or so glory so?

John Smith - Best PM we never had?

John Major - speaks a lot of sense now

Kenneth Clarke - another best PM we never had.

Haven't thought it through so don't flame me.

Current lot in power cant think of any.....

Well lets talk Gordon Brown shall we ,
  1. We have already the mentioned his biggest blunder the Gold thing,
  2. Now the PHD thing its a piece of paper right ,supposed to mean he's learnt something from a book and managed to retain it for the exam right , Yet totally outwitted by Blair numerous times for a position that he was groomed for by John Smith, Squandered one of the biggest war chests ever left by the Tory governemnt on quango's and lost causes ,most defunct before he left office .
  3. And yet another Career Politician who never held a real job in real world ,
  4. Managed to get himself tangled and embroiled in Mcgann case ..........................which should be subject to further scrutiny
  5. End of his term left the coffers completely empty and the country in a right state ..............this is you PHD career Politiican

Blair Charisma :saifi:
6 Now Blair, of course your Glory years , the hey days eh, Misdameanours of a sexual nature at the begiining of his career,
  1. Did the dirty tricks on the PHD guy to gain first crack at being PM, and then revoked the ageement to hand over after one term lol, ( these are best mates eh)
  2. Embroiled permanently in unclear property dealings covering up for his no2 Peter Mandelson more dodgy dealing re mortgage fraud, was at the helm when the MP expenses scandal
  3. Lets get onto the Iraq thing ..............................weapons of mass destruction , (falsley arranging weapons grade material was being sort in west africa) David Kelly affair , Alistair Campbell leaking this and that to channel 4 , Achieved nothing for the UK in terms of the EU, in fact the opposite

Im bored now , cant you see or wont you see how flawed all these career politicians have been, they have all very badly misjudged the situation regarding our ecomomy and Europe for successive administrations, which has now be born out , The crumbling EU seen for what it is ; hollow and lacking substance, and yes full of wannabe career politicians .

You see i havent had to touch on Corbyn , or momentum or Abbot , or Thornberry, Chucka , or Barry Gardener ...........................now there's another flawed story

Oh and John Major, whose main policy was reinventing family values whilst secretly shaggging Edwina Curry lol

Embittered Ken Clarke the staunch defender of the EU could never quite back down and admit he got it so wrong, all those years wasted singing the same song from the wrong hymn sheet

Does anyone else think Dominic Raab looked close to breaking in the interview tonight.
He faltered on his words five times, he struggled to speak his "lines" on three occasions and his bottom lip quavered twice. I have re watched his speech and all I can think is that he has been dropped into a slot which he would rather not be in.
I am not suggesting for one minute he is not up to the job, I think he is but if ever I saw a politician age two years in two days it is him.
God help him find strength, poor bloke.

On a second note, Hugo, from the Eye, why don't you take up a different job, you are not cut out for media.

Been following this thread for a bit and somewhat surprised at how direct some of the communication has become for a normally friendly forum. Then I went onto PH and realised that the chat on SM is about as threatening as the Hugh Grant/Colin Firth fight scene in Bridget Jones.

I suppose everything is IMHO and we are all nervous about loved ones and our jobs & finances, hence the energetic posts. Clearly Q2 GDP will be dire but things will recover and maybe this will be a useful reset for all of us to assess what we really need?

I don't buy into the high inflation argument as demand will still be as weak as it was before even after the Q4 (or whenever) rebound. That said as an older person high inflation would not worry me at all and it is the classic way of governments' reducing the real value of debt, however, I don't see it happening. There is an amazing amount of doom and gloom about and, sure, some asset prices will suffer more than others but this is not a classic recession with a normal demand/supply imbalance. Instead its a massive exogenous shock just like a major earthquake would be but demand has not evaporated, it has just been deferred. Sure people maybe more cautious in the aftermarket and that is no bad thing as as a whole we need to collectively have more buffer cash/realisable investments but people who seem stagflation and the like are way off the mark.......................................................................IMHO.

Its a chuckle Bigbob all very tongue in cheek , i'll get really cuddly when we all meet up ...........thats a promise ;) those that know me will vouch

Why are you going over old politicians here? Lets get on with the business in hand with the current politicians that we have. So far they are doing a great job for me (for full disclosure I am not politically pursueded in any direction).
NO previous politicians ever had this much stress .............bar NONE. This is the worst scenario since World War Two.
Who cares about Brown or Blair or Major or Corbyn in this current Chinese created mess we are in.

Hi Benny, I assume you are not worried yet, not even a little bit ?

Not in the slightest. I’m getting on with it; I get my paper most mornings and sit on the roof terrace doing the cryptic and then sort out little jobs for the rest of the day until it’s time to crack open a beer. If I catch it, I catch it and if I don’t, life goes on as normal. Fortunately, the house is big enough to avoid the Mrs all day or meet up in the evening. I wish we could have a months ‘lockdown’ every year to catch up on all those outstanding jobs. Personally I’m enjoying it.

So, I'm allowed to rant on here right.
Tell me somebody, has BBC lost the plot or have I?
Question time tonight on BBC1 with Fiona Bruce has got RUBY WAX on the panel.
What the **** for. What can a comedian tell me that I want to hear in these seriously bad times.
NOT going to watch it.

Love it! I particularly hate Blair, he should be held accountable, Brown was just an idiot...

The problem is that printing money is one of the motivators of inflation. I can’t see any countries doing that at that moment..,,

It can be if a country is close to full employment but can’t see that being a problem in the short term

I agree, both were c*nts, especially Blair. However, Brown kept us out of the Euro and, with the way things are going, that will be his legacy. Blair on the other hand, would have sold us down the river in a capsized boat in order to become the next President of the EU. That malignant fuckpig was always interested in No1 and what was best for him. It appears he hasn’t changed. Here’s a question; who was the only politician that was never investigated over the allowances scandal?
