I absolutely can see why you would want to get tested if you are feeling unwell, and especially if you have vulnerable people around you.

But I'm not sure why it would be sensible public health policy to use a test kit on someone with flu (or even symptoms consistent with a mild corona virus infection). If testing resources were infinite and free, I suppose it would be worth testing everybody every day to gather better data. But as they are not, why would it be sensible to test in this case? Surely it is better to conserve resources for when it gets more serious?
Surely if you don’t test, then you don’t know the numbers infected.....or stop the spread as some may not take isolation seriously.
How can you accurately calculate a death rate if the sum of the parts is not known?
An accurate total, may make the death rate even less.......

I’m assuming that some of those that died may have had “ mild corona virus infection” symptoms, that developed into something deadly.

Do the numbers really matter at the end of the day though? It will take its course, one way or another. Planning for something, where the numbers will no doubt be used, that is an unknown and in a state of flux, is a fairly pointless task.

A sobering article. I know my cousin, who is a nurse, has been told she may have to work in any ward at any time.

I don’t understand how it will work. Nurses and doctors going back to their children and family. They are risking themselves and loved ones. No one on the front line has confidence in the general strategy or approach.

There are lots of conspiracy theories flying around. There is always a chance it’s been engineered but there are theorists blaming China, Russia and the USA! Nature is a strange thing. For those comparing it to SARS. Did that affect anyone you know? This willl.
Yep..I guessed there would be
But when all is said and done and we are out on the other side of this then there needs to be a thorough investigation into exactly where this came from other than its 'Pangolins revenge". Furthermore there needs to be an investigation into the despicable and disgusting way in which many Asian countries treat wild (and domestic) animals and stop these appalling practises. Enough said I think....

I have a daughter who is a mental health nurse and they are under immense pressure as the publicity around all of this is sending many patients into an internal frenzy.

My other daughter is a school teacher at a school where two pupils tested positive latest week - school is open as usual tomorrow.

I have 800 staff working at would could be described as “the real front line” that won’t get a mention in any news bulletins, they never do.........

Then there are those people who only need to worry about how much Pasta and Toilet paper they can bulk buy and hoard.

Indeed. My wife is a medical secretary for a
Mental health team. She has fielded loads of very traumatic calls this week. More so than usual.

Me: Do I get company sickpay if I fall ill with Coronavirus?
Gaffer:No
Me: Well i will just have to attend then. What are you going to do when the whole workforce is ill?
Gaffer: That's when our insurance kicks in
Tossers....
Had the same discussion at work. Some of our guys are weekly paid and live week to week. Why would they stay off.
I don’t get sick pay until the 2 April. And then it’s 2 weeks. So up until then I would have to use holidays.

It's shocking Dave, this day and age everyone working should be entitled to sick pay, and not the meagre SSP they try to fob you off with. I'm seriously considering leaving the company because of it. I'm weekly paid and so don't get that benefit. Without us hands on workers the members of staff wouldn't have a job to go to? What gives there?

I had an argument with the youngsters at work. I see sick pay like car insurance, there when you need it. They were happy to trade it off against more time off, a really blinkered and short term view imho. I'll be one of the luckier ones, if it comes to it, and that's the correct word, but 6 months full pay will soften it a bit.

I've been on the sick twice in about 40 odd years, once when I put my back out 9/11 time, and again when I had my eye op a few years ago. I'm off just now, but only because I wasn't allowed to go as I had recently returned from Sicily.
