Most companies, if you are paid a car allowance, expect you to have a £20K+ car that is relatively new under manufactures warranty or extended warranty.
Of course if you can get away with less and use the money for other things...

I had a company car with my last job and the tax was just silly and there is a thin line making it work. You have to do the miles. This time I took the car allowance but the company doesn't dictate what car I get. It's up to me. I could have a £900 banger as it isn't up to them. when I worked for Asada I took the allowance as well and they had no say in what I bought.

It's not looking like that option is going to work and it's quite a lot of effort.

Some really nice options, though, in this thread!

The xf interior is a lovely place to be sat , my problem when I was looking was I was only drawn to the XFR , the 3.0 diesel is pretty nippy though

Jaguar loaned me a 3.0 XFR Sport, it was very very quick, but only after you've got to 70 mph. Which kinda defeats the object.
I was left for dead by a Golf GTD.

Lovely looking cars, but mechanically inferior to the E350D AMG Merc.

So I bought the Merc.

Problem for me is the image with Mercedes as I don't play Golf or wear slippers but I like driving.
Oh the MB ignition key drives me nuts.
I prefer the Jaguar image for me
Racing Drivers
Bank Robbers
The Sweeney
Just my thoughts.

There is a v6 Rover 75 for sale near me for £1,500.

Come on C make your choice or more daft offers will be on their way.

I totally agree, however, when you do 20-30,000 miles a year, the outside becomes secondary to the drive and interior.
When that's the case the Merc wins hands down.

Loving the replies chaps.
I still like my drives to be fun and now having done 2,000 kilometers in my first diesel Jaguar I'm loving it.
Arthur Daley was a Hero of mine what a character always immaculately dressed and drove a proper car.
Still rate my XJC as one of my best cars as far from perfect with 70'S BL build but style and charm along with Race proven mechanicals.
I don't want to upset the Golfers but its that image.

This thread is great. I'm not getting any closer to a mile muncher, and even less likely to get anything done before Christmas, but it's a great laugh :)

I've never been a big Mercedes fan.but since I've had the C class as a daily drive I tend to agree with Mark. They are so we'll build and feel solid and for me the older shape feels better built than the latest one. When I bought mine from Mercedes the newer ones just didn't feel as quality as the older one I went for. The sales man hinted the same. Perfect for what I need it for.

Glad that we are keeping you amused Chris.
Just don't by the Rover 75 Peter mentioned unless you want to be a modern James Herriot ;)

When I was looking at for my current runabout I actually looked at some Rover 75s they’re super good value and have often been really looked after by an old bloke (mind the wee stains!). I also looked at Jags and even bought a 2.7d unseen but when I got there it was a dog and got my money back. I was getting really desperate being without a proper car I jumped at the Merc and haven’t regretted it. Another option if you want really cheap is an MG ZT they drive brilliantly
