Why don't they at least get the stance right? It's atrocious enough already without making it look like a SUV.

From German news site: translated via google

"Who has such big goals such as Maserati, must not be afraid of new ways. At the Shanghai Motor Show 2013, the ambitious Italians now show what car they want to come to the objective pursued an annual production of 50,000 units a step closer: The new Maserati Ghibli is the brand accessible with the trident and open up new customer groups.
Maserati Ghibli: Italian luxury sedan in Shanghai

With its dimensions of the Maserati Ghibli aims obvious to the German premium luxury from Stuttgart, Munich and Ingolstadt. This is also the second look at the technology significantly: In general, the new entry-level Maserati drives the rear wheels, there is an optional four-wheel drive Q4 said. Garnished is the package of around 1.7 metric tons a 500 liter boot, and of course an engine that exudes Italian passion:

To start a standard developed jointly with Ferrari V6 uses 3.0 liters, direct injection and turbocharging, the bow of the Ghibli. With 410 hp and 550 Nm of maximum torque of Ghibli directly targets Audi S6 & Co., the modern eight-speed automatic is capable of both the sporting and the gentle pace.

This is also in the interior clearly shines with quality workmanship and fine materials. Nevertheless it should not be a softener of Ghibli: While there the next-generation Quattroporte, the statesman, the little brother is clearly designed as a car for people who place high value on driving pleasure.

The powerfully shaped rear fender and the four tailpipes at the rear make the Ghibli is not just a typical Maserati, they harmonize perfectly with the trapezoidal grille, and the proud trident shaped front end. The Maserati logo on the C-pillar and the three air outlets in the front fenders round out the Maserati look.

The engine range will be expanded soon after the launch: a diesel for Europe is already scheduled, a hybrid offshoot Although not yet decided, but in sight. The price is like the Italians not too far apart from its German opponents: the 410 hp strong Ghibli to come for around 80,000 euros in the trade.

Not sure why they have gone down the Audi styling route. What sold Maserati's was their appearance and they've killed that. What stopped them selling was perceived unreliability, high service costs, a small dealer network, and of course high initial purchase price. this new range won't change any of those factors.

The irony is that were those photos of the new Audi we would still be saying how bland the whole thing looks. That is a very sad indictment indeed.

Still in the pub............bl..dy weather

That wheel is straight from BMW 3 series M sport and the front lower bumper.

Loathe them or love them, Merc's Audi's and Beemers each have distinct DNA. Similar in many ways, but you can distinguish each from one and other from some distance, whether you can see the badge or not.

Sadly this is an exercise in cloning gone wrong. It has a mishmash of Deutsch DNA all chucked in a test tube, then when they poured out the ungodly brew they remembered they'd best fling a few Maserati styling cues at it as an afterthought, which subsequently look pastiche.

Increasingly disillusioned by the guys making the decisions at Maserati. I understand (and entirely agree) that they need to get in the game, but the way they're going about it is trampling all over a great heritage; a heritage that should be their greatest asset.

Maserati Ghibli - Shame on you Maserati, shame on your lack of vision and shame on you lacking the balls to plough your own furrow.

The biggest disgrace? ----- The Chrysler 300C is actually better resolved and more memorable than this car.

I referred to this in a previous thread (Is it a bird.......) after chatting to Angelina in Italy. Now Auto Express have confirmed it

But the saloon is just the first phase of Maserati’s masterplan. The Levante SUV is due to arrive late next year, featuring the same petrol and diesel engine line-up and priced to match the BMW X5 and Audi Q7.

Beyond that, a replacement for the GranTurismo coupe is expected in 2015, and Maserati boss Harald Wester has hinted at launching a limited-series sports car at around the same time. This is likely to be based around the Alfa Romeo 4C’s carbon tub, with V6 power, and could cap an incredible period of growth for this historic brand.

Lets hope they get the message by then.

Miles has got it spot on.

On another thought does this benefit us owners of older Maserati in a way that they might be seen as the pinnacle of Maserati (when they sorted reliability / build quality but still were true Maserati) or will it devalue them in the way that say nobody really desires an early 2000's E-class anymore?

I'm probably the only one on here that likes it! It does have Audi, BMW styling but it still looks like a Maserati to me. It'll sound like one too I'm sure.

If you removed the trident and holes in the wing would you honestly identify it as a Maserati? If forced to guess I'd have been stuck between BMW/Audi or most likely Lexus doing their usual Getman design clones
