Trouble is Phil, there's lot of skanker's out there who take no notice and don't even give a toss!

And there are also those that will use this to scare customers. All ready seen 1 guy whose wife was told they needed new brakes etc £850, he went up changed pads and adjusted hand brake, retest, fine. Fairly well known main stream dealer.

Alex’s car ‘failled’ Last week for a dangerous; not working rear position light! Amazingly it was working 5 minutes before when I checked all the lights and 20 minutes later it passed ok, even more incredible was that the bulb was not changed or charged....

Me sceptical that the garage was getting their failure numbers up?

As a person who does all his own repairs, I do see this as a serious error in the system, you really should have the opportunity to take a vehicle home or to your nominated garage.

Crazy thing is its Politicians who right the manual.
When I did my MOT inspectors test in Bristol I was told by VOSA that I wouldn't agree with them on many items but it had to be adhered too.
Done the course here too in NZ but have decided not to test as again too much Bullsh!t for me.

There are plenty of MOT stations that only do MOT and tyres, or even MOT only, such as local council run ones. Is the plan that they end up with a pile of scrap cars sitting at their front door, or that folk pay to get their cars towed elsewhere. I understand that it's a safety thing, but these places were good if you didn't trust other places to not rip you off, seems that being ripped off is almost encouraged at a government level..

I think some of the MOT stations will be ott for a while until things settle down. I did wonder if they would be extra strict when the law first came in. All this whilst 40 year old cars no longer need an MOT.

Sorry I am behind on this now.

Simple question, my tax exempt 1969 (age 49) Opel GT now does not require an mot?

So I just tax it online (free) and away I go or do I not even have to do that now as long as it’s insured?

No MOT needed on 40 years and older cars now. I do believe it has to be registered as MOT exempt with DVLA and this can be done by ringing 03007906802.
Opel GT nice cars, always remined me of a small Corvette Stingray.

Mind boggles, so we have changed the MOT to make it safer for all road users, unless your car is 40 years old . I think the conspiracy is to get us all into 3 year lease deals or at least make sure you turn your car over more offer and make bangernomics a thing of the past.

We seem to have created a hole in the middle. Drive new more efficient cars that cost a lot to the environment to build...maybe environment neutral by the end of their life if your lucky it seems. As when they get too old they are not economic to keep alive any more so no more cars short of expensive exotics will survive to 40 years old but then you can be MOT free. Forget reusing or keeping the cars we have spent an environmental fortune/cost to build and crush em.

If you go onto the dvla website to tax it as usual you will be asked to confirm the vehicle has not been substantially modified. ( there is an explanation of what constitutes substantial modified)
You confirm it hasn't been modified and system then informs you an MOT is not required. You complete your taxation (no cost) and receive email/text conforming taxed for next 12 months.
I "taxed" several of my bikes at the weekend this way.
There are however some anomalies which will be clarified no doubt as system beds in.
For instance what happens if you decide to MOT your old vehicle and it fails? Do you need to sort and re test?
You have a vehicle which is mot'd and due a retest but is over 40 years old. Do you simply ignore the test? I am phoning Dvla today about some other matter so will see if someone there can advise.
I mot'd a vehicle yesterday and garage said they have no instructions on this.

I think I’ll get the Opel pre mot’d every 3 years or so. It only does a hundred miles a year

Alex’s VW camper is 40 in the spring so this should be its last MOT in a few weeks.

What do you do if your old car is substantially modified and you just blag it and say no

How would they know?.. a mate has a 1990's Alfa 2Litre TSpark in his 1970 Giulia 1300!

He's not sure to blag it or not, as there was talk about you losing your original reg and be given a Q plate

I'm sure there used to be a formula for a Q plate in the past, depending on how many substantial components had been changed.

My Stag falls into the over 40 years old, already taxed (free) but the MOT is due the end of this month.
As said, all the gov info refers to when taxing, and declaring MOT exempt at that time, nothing about if already being taxed!
So will be very interested in your findings as loads of owners will be in the same situation, for this first time only until re-taxing on-line next year.
