My Stag falls into the over 40 years old, already taxed (free) but the MOT is due the end of this month.
As said, all the gov info refers to when taxing, and declaring MOT exempt at that time, nothing about if already being taxed!
So will be very interested in your findings as loads of owners will be in the same situation, for this first time only until re-taxing on-line next year.
Ok spoke to DVLA and DVSA and story is as follows.
If vehicle is over 40 years old get the V5C changed to show "historic class" if not done already.
If vehicle is due a "tax" and not changed to historic go to Post Office and they will amend class there and send V5C to DVLA and "tax" for free while you are there. New V5C back in 4 weeks they say.
If V5C is showing "historic" and mot falls due you dont have to do anything as the system will show it is exempt automatically. So basically ignore it.
Spoke to DVSA and they say if vehicle is exempt for MOT but you get one done then if it fails you will need to get it retested to pass before you can use it.
If you arent sure then pay a garage to do a pre-test instead I guess.

Thanks for that.
Will check the day after the current MOT expires to see what they say about it on-line, to be sure.
As said, no MOT, no TAX, insurance is something like £150 for unlimited miles. Just add fuel.
Cheap motoring really and the Stag doesn't drive like an old car either, rear trailing arm suspension, mcpherson front struts, servo disc front brakes, power steering, lecky windows, adjustable steering column, laminated glass, crash design etc etc. Relatively little progress in over 40 years really compared to the previous 10!

I had my 3 year old car MOT'd last week , they now have a dongle that plugs into the OBD port so they're certain the car they're emissions testing matches the info the dvla have on file so that's going to knacker the dial an MOT lot

You have to do a lot of MOT tests Dave to recoup your money spent on getting a Test Bay set up.
Let alone trying to earn an income that many must earn on here.
I have been involved in the Profession for 40 years still spending money and working the hours mate.

Thats sort of what I meant - they no doubt have been made to buy this gadget in order to carry on testing. they will have to recoup / make up the cost, though I suppose it will go against expenses and a business depreciating asset...

Been like that for years here in Sweden. If you don’t have an odb, they put a sensor on the exhaust, otherwise all data through the odb. Surely not that expensive....

Interesting.
Makes good sense.
