Hi Loz,
I think we are at cross purposes here, I was not slagging off the Cat Standards, they are there for a reason. The point I was trying to make, was that this seller/dealer has described an item as Stolen Recovered, when it is more than likely a Cat-D, two different things. I believe this is contrary to the Trade Descriptions Act and possibly the Sale of Goods Act, as the item is being misrepresented to achieve a better price. If they guy was on the level, he would be clear about the actual position of the item and then let buyers go for it knowing the true facts, instead of blatantly lying for his own ends.
Cheers

Salvage always increases in price, during the Summer, due to lack of secondhand cars.

Andy.

I think people buying to export to Eastern Europe (in particular) is one of the main factors in the current high prices - heard this from several difference sources - all of whom would know better than I!

Absolutely. Infact scrap metal is booming, due to the Chinese market.
Anything Mercedes, is heading to Africa.

Rob the guy had no problem admitting to me first off on the telephone that the engine was hydrolocked , and didn't turn over by hand , he was evasive as to the extent of any water ingress damage into the cabin saying that the interior showed no signs of any water damage , as always buyer beware and a good thorough inspection needed, there's always speculation with this kind of thing

One thing that hasn't been mentioned so far is that the Cats might be damaged , 2 x cats is a lot of dosh around £2500 last time i checked

regards loz

Sounds mad, but sometimes, heating the cat[off the car] up with a blow lamp, untill its mad hot, can make them work again. Depends on age, miles, type of mileage.
Amount of cars i have put through a MOT, and emissions fail, then get the cat as hot as possible, and suddenly, the car passes. Many cars have had Cats replaced, needlessly, because the cat was not hot enough.
So now, any car i have, gets a bottle of injector cleaner, and a good blast up the motorway, prior to the test.

You can have the cats cut open and replace the material so the cats would not worry me too much.

On my GS, I removed the secondaries and it still passed an MOT.

Minimum standard visual inspection outdated test only realy valid at time of test. Opened my eyes when I got my licence. Phil.

Still seems a bargain to me P. If there was ANY risk of water ingress into the cabin and there was a chance it was sewage water, then as far as I'm aware it's an automatic write-off, but if as Loz states it's very slight if at all, then even a £6.7K repair (assuming a decent low mileage replacement engine) then you still have a good spec GS for sub £20K - what's not to like?

It's a 2007 car with 22k on the clock....These things are up for 30k plus at specialist now......so if it can be bought and put right for 20k then surely thats a saving...

So, there is an engine, possibly both cats and a labour bill of who knows, but considerable. Price currently at £10.3K and if this seller is bidding also, it could finish up at quite a high figure, which in the long run with a Cat-D against the car, could make it not really viable. I suppose it depends on what the car goes for?

That seems a lot to pay for the 4200 and the GS in that condition, is it someone off here Matt?
