Spring clean - picture heavy content!

I've had my GS a couple of months now and shamefully admit to using the local eastern Europeans to wash my car on a couple of occasions. My only defence is that it's been winter and too wet or cold to get my car cleaning kit out. Today I spent a few hours giving her a thorough clean and inspection so that I know what to do when the warmer weather arrives.
So, start with a car that looks fine from a distance::

Not so good close up:

Get out some old favourites and open the box of goodies recently ordered:

Let it snow:

I left this to sit for a few minutes then agitated all the badges, shut lines and hard to reach areas with one of my new brushes:

The car was then thoroughly rinsed with a power washer before I used a product I'd never tried before - Iron X. I'd read about iron particles sticking to paintwork and doing damage. Airborne particles, brake pad dust etc. all contribute and are often unseen by the naked eye. I liberally applied this over the car and wheels and was surprised by the results. You leave this stuff on for a few minutes and it turns purple/red as it reacts with the tiny iron particles. I thought before doing this that the car was already quite clean, but every single panel was covered in loads of purple marks and runs where the Iron X was working (pics don't show on the paintwork very well, but it was everywhere:

Another heavy snow-foam and rinse again before I washed the car with a microfibre noodle mitt, using the 2 bucket method. If anyone doubts this method have a look at the picture below. I'm half way through washing a car which has already been snow-foamed and rinsed twice. Can you guess which is the rinse bucket?!

All door shuts, boot and bonnet openings etc. were also given the treatment:

I then dried her with microfibre towels and cleaned the glass before standing back to admire the results of my labour:

Finally, a shot from earlier in the day when I cleaned the interior:

The car still needs some work when things warm up. Lots of tar spots (found a new product for that!) then a full clay, polish and wax. I've recently bought a machine polisher, so will be practicing on other cars/panels before improving the paintwork later this year.

I've just been out for a good hour's drive in her, the best feeling after giving her some attention.

Keep posting, this is really interesting. Maybe I need to invest in a bigger range of car cleaning chemicals.

what is the brush that you used for the badges Maf?
Also, with the snow foam, I have seen some cars look like a pavlova when they have been sprayed. Is that dependant on the ratio it is mixed or different brands of soap?

Looks very nice indeed!

I cleaned the 3200 this weekend too; washed, dodo juice lime pre wax then dodo juice light fantastic wax. Though not as impressive as a deeper coloured car it came up glass like and can highly recommend the dodo juice range. I did the daily drive first as a test bed and it came up better than new with a very deep/wet look to the paint.

The brush MAF used is a detailing brush, you guessed it.....at all reputable auto stores near you!

Was going to do the same to mine but still fixing the list of issues. Finally got her up on the ramp in the garage, wheels off, rear discs off, handbrake shoes stripped and on their way to Gary.

Spent the rest if the day trying to get one nut off. Got the blighter in the end, good old blow torch!

Thanks for the positive comments. As Matt said, the brush is a detailing brush which is readily available. I have a set of 5 of various sizes to get into all the hard to reach places. I used 4 new things I've never used before today- the detailing brushes, the Iron X, a grit catcher in my rinse bucket and a stiff brush for the interior whilst hoovering. All products were an improvement on anything I've done before and I'm a sucker for new/different car cleaning products! I've spent a lot of time on Detailing World lately, a place I can really lose myself in (very much like here!)
The next thing on my list is Tardis which is like the Iron X but for tar deposits. I used a new wheel brush today that was pretty good but am also going to invest in a set of wheel woolies. If I can master the machine polishing then I'll be very happy.

Snow foam really varies. If the car looks like a meringue then it's probably too rich a mixture. My pic was taken a few minutes after applying when it had started to drop off. Snow foam is meant to loosen the dirt and then take it off the car by dripping without any hand cleaning that could rub grit into the paintwork. If the foam is too thick it will sit there and not do the job properly.

I used these guys, but there are plenty of places online to buy from.

My biggest issue is knowing which products to go for when there are so many waxes, compounds, chemicals etc. to choose from. Many are not cheap, so some time spent researching can be well spent.

No wax this time as I want to clay and polish beforehand. From the beading I got when cleaning the car I could see the paintwork is still well protected.
