Talking to a nice officer today and he tells me, currently it's a £100 fine for not displaying a valid tax disc, he also tells me that the Police computer at the moment, has no records of whether a car is taxed..!! It does identify vehicles that have for example had a cheque bounce for payment of the disc and it has MOT, Insurance, but nothing on tax..!! DVLA are now in a bit of a panic as they have to get all the records ready to put on the computer, before Autumn time when the disc will no longer be required..!!

So they've lost one of their excuses for all those ANPR cameras that are at every junction and on most lamp posts round here.

I've also seen a mobile one operated out of a DVLA van recently. Do the DVLA deal with MOTs and insurance?

that really surprises me. Many years ago, I was pulled for not displaying a tax disc in a borrowed car (escort auto, for which the officer ridiculed me!). He said that the car had come back as taxed, even back then, and this must be near 20 yrs ago now. I am surprised that with everything being automated now around the purchase of tax that every single police car doesn't have that info right there. Is there privacy infringements or something?

No idea, that's what I was told, the Police PNC does not have those details unless your application failed for some reason, then it's flagged..??
