Update...a bit late!
2300 mile trip completed through down through France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Luxemburg and Belgium. The tunnel worked great (what a fantastic invention!) and no problems getting on the lower level. Watched the Monaco GP and managed to get a great apartment overlooking the start/San de Vote. Whilst in Italy as the weather was dreadful we turned the opposite way and headed to Modena. Maserati in the UK arranged a private factory tour for the next day which was fantastic, such brilliant service from them. Other than poor weather (Monaco excluded) the trip was epic and one of the best things we've ever done. The Masser didn't miss a beat and coped with everything. Overall mpg (according to trip comp) was 21.4. An awful lot of running on motorways in stealth mode but route Napoleon was epic (8mpg!) and the brakes went soft, which is slightly concerning for the upcoming Bruntingthorpe. Would recommend to anyone a European road trip and were planning next year already! Thanks to all for the advice.
Cheers Blu

Glad you enjoyed the trip Blu. I love my Euro road trips and remember the first time in my 4200 like yesterday. Phil.

Planning a road trip to Monaco in May to hopefully watch the GP. Thinking of going from Calais down to Dijon (overnight booked already) and then onto Nice. The A996 road has been recommended? After having a mooch around thought we'd head to Genoa and then up to Lake Maggiore (overnight perhaps) and then up to Lucern onto Basel and into Germany towards Strasbourg, hopefully taking in an unrestricted Autobahn! Finally heading across to Reims and then back to Calais.
Would appreciate any suggestions or experiences of anyone who's done this trip and any "must do" roads.
Thanks in advance
Blu
Hi there
Did the route Napoleon 2 weeks ago along with a DB9 and a Noble M12, awesome drive.

Really rubbish with taking pics chaps, far too busy driving and listening.
A few attached anyway including view we had for the Monaco GP and driving round the circuit afterwards, parked in front of one of the Ferrari trucks, no doubt containing bits of Massa's car!
Garage lift thingy was at a hotel on lake Maggiore with a rather compact underground carpark, the sensors went nuts!
Obviously had to take pics outside the factory, I'll post another thread on this.
Highly recommended!
Cheers Blu

Sounds like a great trip, Blu. And the colour of your car... *sigh*

We're wondering about a Provence / Nice / Monaco trip this summer. We've stopped a few times in Dijon on the way up and down but would welcome any other tips... routes, stopovers with a large, empty, covered car park - all the critical things. How did you do it?

Hi Adam,
Monaco very easy to do if you use the main roads/motorways as we did. It's possibly doable in a day if you have a early tunnel and 2 of you driving. We took 2 days to get down to Nice (arrived late afternoon). A26 from Calais. past Reims and Troyes then the E21 down to Dijon. We stayed a little outside in a lovely little place called Castelle Tres Girard, nice open carpark with plenty of space a a very good restaurant. From here we carried on down the E21 to Lyon and then picked up the 993 at Bourgoin Jallieu, this effectively runs into the 996 (route Napoleon) which is epic and very worthwhile. Once on the 996 progress slows down but pleasure and fun goes up loads!
We seached around a bit for a hotel in Nice with an underground carpark. Had to pay a little extra but peace of mind etc. We stayed at the Nice Rivera hotel which is fine for what we wanted. Good location and nice rooms but didn't eat there at all.
This was our first proper road trip and I have to say the Maserati was made for this. Much admiration across the whole of Europe and highly recommend Adam.
Feel free to PM if you want any further details.
Cheers Blu

I stopped over in Grenoble on the way down, at the mercure hotel - they have an underground carpark. Turned out to be the place for the early summer car rallye crowd, with a jag club and a Dutch rallye stopping over while I was there.

Also in Digne-Les-bains at a small hotel called Le Grand Paris. It's a small family run place with lots of character. They have a garage for a few cars that can be booked in advance, and you end up walking through the kitchens and laundry room with an ancient sheet press and old ranges to get to it.

Thanks for the pics Blu. I can see that MC is too crowded at F1 weekends. Prefer to go on normal days. Last year we visited MC a coupld of weeks before the GP and traffic was all around. A total death for the clutch.
WOuld love to do the Route Napoleon someday.

I was trying to remember the route we took after Beaune, I think we went down to Lyon then cut across on back roads, on to napoleon. That whole drive was terrific, those back roads were more, or less deserted, good tarmac and we got some great speeds up, brilliant little road race.
It might have Macon we turned off at on the A7, not sure now.

Nikos,
If you made the trip again, would you drive from Athens up through Bosnia etc., or catch a ferry to some closer location. Croatia could be a good meet up point, never been yet..??

Cheers

Robert, i don't feel safe in these roads. Prefer the ferry to Italy, then i can drive anywhere. Always up for some European meeting points. Factory tour next year?
