Just for fun question: If you spell out numbers in sequence..... The word and isnt a number so the first use of the letter A is in one thousAnd. :)

No way; the number 105 spelled out is "one hundred and five" not "one hundred five".

Good point well made! "An infinitesimally small, but significant enough to not be negligeable, increment above zero".

Not at all as AND is not a number. One is a number, hundred is a number the five is a number.

Units , tens hundreds, thousands etc. Any words inbetween just tell you how many to multiply the units by or to add too the units. :)

You say twenty one not twenty and one.

Its the same if you said 1.5 or one point five. The word point isnt a number.

Hhmmm. QM is always right, but on this one I'm with Mark

Is "one hundred and one" not a number?

I agree that point isn't a number, but "one point five" is a number

My grandmother used to say one and twenty when referring to time.

1.5 is the number, so the point is part of it. Without the point the meaning of the number is lost. One and five are digits.

Anyway the answer, as any self respecting owner of an Italian car should know, is quattro.

On that basis NO numbers have the letter A in them, not 1, not 101, not 1000. They are just numbers. But I thought the question was about words and letters (the hint being when you said 'spell out').

You asked: "If you spell out numbers in sequence which is the first number that the letter A is used ?" and I have legitimately interpreted that to mean "If you spell out [using WORDS] numbers in sequence which is the first number that the letter A is used when you spell them out using words?", so it goes:
- one
- two
- three
...
- ninety-nine
- one hundred
- one hundred and one

give me my darn cigar!!! :)
