The moon in question was off screen but on set. The title bestowed by fellow actors was not the only award the actor was "given" for the particular film.

That's the film. The who should be easy now but, just in case, he was seen stroking a pus*y in the opening scene. He also declined to accept the Oscar he won for the role. That's just leaves why he was awarded the title and by whom.

Brando is correct. Not the reason though - the Oscar connection was more an indication of his stature. The largely young cast were initially awestruck of Brando. So Duvall & Caan began mooning him at various times during shooting - until Brando dropped his trousers in return. Whilst the wedding scene was being setup - in front of 500+ extras. In recognition of being outdone Duvall & Caan presented Brando with a belt reading Mighty Moon King.
