Cossington;41548 Does anyone use Bill McGrath for their servicing - presumably they would be well placed to give a considered opinion on the relative costs pof maintaining/ servicing and of reliability of Meraks. [/QUOTE said:
Yes I do and would thoroughly recommend them and as said on another thread I would recommend getting them to inspect the car.

If we went track car, are there any race series we could enter into to get regular use, track time?

This would depend on the exact spec you built the car to. A Trofeo is basically eligible for GT4 so could be entered in European GT4 and maybe British GT GT4 but more probably the GT Cup Class. Then there is also the GT Cup race series which is less strict on spec.

Main problem in the "track" scenario is how it works if (when) someone stuffs it.... do we all pay? Can't think of a more expensrive track mule to put right than a Maser!?

Easy answer is budget for race insurance and the driver at the wheel at the time of an accident picks up the excess.

Me too - breaking original topic entirely for a second it doesn't have to be a Maserati either.... a tricked Fiat 500 is more than a match for a Maser! Finding an appropriate Race series is probably the key - competitive but not extortionate....

on that note, I've got a well sorted Westfield I'd "donate" if the ongoings, could be shared - it butchered the masers round Llandow :) if there's interest we could start another thread - not sure if this is a pipe dream or not?

If you all take the decision to go racing, how many people in the group would want to drive the car? If the route taken is some sort of sprint racing with a Westfield or similar only one person is going to get to race at each race weekend.

If you take a GT route and a series say like GT Cup or Britcar more than one person can drive the car per event, also with endurance racing you are not going to be at 10/10 all the time so in some ways there is less stress on the car. The races are also longer so you get more track time per event.

My personal preference would be shared driving over a longer format. I was thinking a cheap Maser (Cat D?) that could be stripped and race prepared. I don't have any race license, but would be quite happy to take any course required to get one. Unlike the classic route, I'd justify this to myself as an active pastime, so if it costs to participate, so be it, rather than seeing the whole project as an investment with the expectation of any return down the line.

GT Cup would be a good championship, a race weekend would probably set you back 5-15K.

Adam,

£15K is a big budget per race weekend. With that budget and if I could choose my driver/s I would be expecting to mount a serious challenge on any of the championships my Ginetta is eligible for ie Ginetta G50 Cup, British GT GT4 or the European GT4 Cup.

The biggest cost is tyres and if you are racing for fun rather than to win, you can reduce that cost considerably.

Britcar entry is looks to be between £1300 - 2k per race weekend inc quali. Robin, have you done much racing? What kind of costs would you invisage?

Hi Simon,

I am founder and Co-Team Principal of a young team that we started at the beginning of 2008. We are a small team that runs to professional standards although our four directors all give their time to the team.

In 2008 we contested the entire Ginetta G50 Cup championship. We were top six from the outset and got three podiums, pole at Silverstone, fastest lap at Donington and led several races, sadly never quite getting the elusive win. Not bad for our first year.

We didn't have a G50 Cup budget in 2009 so Ginetta suggested we enter the FIA European GT4 Cup, we did four rounds in total finishing 2nd at Zolder, we did no testing all year so again not bad for our first year at that level.

This year we did a couple of G50 Cup rounds mostly with pay drivers due to budget.

Next year we hope to do a full season in the the G50/55 Cup with at least one quick driver..........

The costs question is a tough one as you could spend a lot to do a Britcar round but if you are sensible they can be kept in check.

Assuming no paid team members and that everyone takes care of their own accommodation and food costs you cold probably expect to do a round for £6-£8K assuming no major problems with the car.

It is also worth bearing in mind racing is a very time consuming business when doing it yourself at this level rather than paying for an arrive and drive arrangement with a team.

You would also need to bare in mind set up costs for all the equipment you need to go racing.

well i was thinking that figure as the company work for, JMH Ferrari and Porsche specialist, race in the GT Cup and Britcar championship however they race a Class 1 Porsche GT3 Cup and that costs around 10-15K to race for the weekend with all costs covered. Like you say, tyres are probably the biggest cost as a set of slicks is around 1K.

A Maserati 3200 race prepped would probably fall into Class 3 or 4 (there is a total of 4 classes).

Thanks fellas,

Robin, i am incredibly jealous! I've watched the Ginettas on Motors and they look fantastic fun.... at those costs it certainly wouldn't be viable (for me certainly). this might be more like it http://www.sports2000-srcc.com/index.cfm. but I assuming there are no takers?? it's a shame as none of my closets friends are really into cars (bizarrely) so I think this may be consigned to day dreams for a while longer....
