Please upgrade the brake pads when you get this car. I just upgraded the 3200's to Kevlar pads and the difference is amazing!

Update on the brake pads...

My contact at Euro Car Parts has confirmed that the BMW fitment pad is the identical one to the 3200/4200 pad being sold by brakeparts.co.uk However, legally the aren't allowed to sell them for fitment to a car other than the model that they have the Reg 90 approval for (which makes them road legal).

Though if you order them online, no one knows what car you have or plan to fit them to...

Technically I guess it could affect insurance/warranty claims, but unless the claim arose from brake failure then IMO I'm not sure than any claims inspector would ever check what brake pads were fitted..?

So, Textar front brake pads for 3200/4200/GS for £63 a pair. Or less right now seeing as Euro Car Parts are offering 25% off all online brake part orders at the moment...

Not bad. I'll add that to the alternative sheet, perhaps you can do a post on the alternative parts thread as well?

Very few aftermarket brake manufacturers list such as the later Maserati's, or Ferrari's, that's only due to the licencing arrangements and the fact that the car manufacturers want to charge the earth for normal product. If anyone can tell what pad is actually fitted once they have done around 1K miles, they are a better man than me..!!

Contigo,
Who's pads did you use out of interest..??
Cheers
R

I will confirm for sure later but I think they are EBC Red Stuff. There are three grades of pad and the ones that were on mine were the lowest. This resulted in the brake pedal travelling about half way before they started to function. Even when they started they were very dull and did not work very well. Now the bite is right at the top and they stop the car very well.

Tested my cold brakes this afternoon, coming back from Brent cross and someone in a range rover decided not to look, pulled out in front of me and then just stopped for no apparent reason. I could see she was both on the phone and turning round to yell at a child. Almost wish I'd hit her with that kind of attitude, but the brakes stopped me with about an inch to spare.

Brakes are so important, get the best you can and keep them in good nick, like Chris you never know when you need to rely heavily on them..!!

Textar pads aren't a cheap brake pad. In the trade they are regarded as an OE material and it's Textar fitted as standard to most Porsche, Ferrari, Aston Martin, BMW and Mercedes. I used to have a list of which makes and models used Textar and Pagid as factory fit and it was quite impressive. TMD Friction is the world's leading brake friction manufacturer and Textar is their premium brand.

They'll provide equally good stopping power to anything else out there (other than carbon ceramic) but less pesky than EBC, so they'll operate more consistently across the temperature range.

Just because they are OEM does not mean they are good Simon. The OEM Maserati brake pads are pretty awful and these Kevlar ones are much better.

The original discs and pads weren't very good at all...the Brembos and greengrippers are better if only for general road use

I agree that the OE pad may not always provide the best braking performance, as they're developed to be a good compromise on a number of levels - including noise, wear rate, dust, vibration... Plus it depends on whose friction material is used in the OE pad.

I'm sure that the Textar pads wouldn't provide the same fade free performance as ceramic/Kevlar pads in higher temp ranges, and if you wanted a track pad I wouldn't use Textar, but I've used their pads before on several Porsches and I know that the friction materials they use (they have 3 different compounds) are all very good. Certainly they'll be way better than the Mintex pads that brakeparts.co.uk are selling. The Mintex M1144 material is a relatively cheap compound and has been problematic - mainly by being too noisy. But M1144 also has a lower coefficient of friction than the Textar materials. In short, they don't provide the same amount of stopping power.

I'll fit the Textar pads and report back.

Incidentally, Brembo brake pads are made by TMD and largely the same material as Pagid. My company designed the packaging for TMD, using the Brembo branding.

I should also add that I don't work with TMD now, so I no longer have any connection with the company!
