You guys.... it would be funny except they are all worth peanuts compared with the new price. I've had mine 7 years and lost just £10k... I lost more on my Audi in a year. All our cars are peanuts really, for the car you get.

Well my thread has fairly stirred some debate, but for the money, imho, you will be hard pushed to find anything better

Agreed, and they are all Maseratis. I'm only trying to promote a bit of banter between us on the light side and those on the dark side. However, when push comes to shove we are all on the same team!

a good bit of banter is healthy, just such a shame for the 4200 owners losing out of the rear lights. I also feel the breakdowns of the 3200 are blown out of proportion a bit. Any car manufacturer with a poor reputation, the first decent car they produce will still get slated more than it should as people view it with premade conceptions of the brand - i owned a lotus esprit, the elise are very reliable but tarnished with lots of trouble usually serious (LOTUS)

I think Drellis, so many of the 3200s faults ( and regular ones too) were in its early life, also were unresolved for some time, plus were very expensive to correct, it takes some time for bad reputations to be become good reputations.....10-20 years!

but really the faults were/ are only throttle body/ pedal pot and end float, which is not a problem, so buy a auto with contactless and jobs done, also not susceptible to standing water (air intake) and oil/water pumps going bang

From SpyderNick..........doesn't make pretty reading......

My 3 year year old 3200GT Auto with 30k on the clock had a number of replacement parts in the 2 years I owned it. The bits I can remember are:

New crank and bearings
New gearbox
New air con compressor
New throttle body
New sub frame
New engine mounts
New ...........

All under warranty and about 5 months off the road in total !
I did basically give up on it in the end and after I sold it the differential went !

I can't remember the total cost but the crank and gearbox was about £10k god knows how much the engine mounts and sub frame really cost. It was why I went to a Ferrari, thought it can't cost any more, but I still came back to a Maserati and my Spyder has been ultra reliable.
The one question I was asked by a number of people at Stanford on Sunday was about reliability and running costs and I could tell them that my Spyder was no more to run than a new bmw or Audi. I couldn't really recommend a 3200 but I still remember the power delivery of those turbos, which was great fun.

I just love my 02 cc spyder. the shift is clunk, clunk but that gives it character. as for sound I am using pipes without any restrictions. the sound is wonderful and not intrusive. but driving at the speed of sound means I cannot hear the disturbance. point, I have not been stopped for noise. I bought mine in 03 as a wreck. paid $42,000 and added $8,500 to finish. have driven 25,000. car now has issues. clutch, top not working properly. and worse,i drove it to work when the temp. was zero. sat out all day. started it and the oil was so cold that it failed to lub the valve train. that was 4 years ago. I had been driving it until last fall keeping the revs under 5,000 then it started making nasty rattle sounds. I parked it. another wreck came up with 7,200 miles and I paid $8,500. looks new inside. LH front frame pushed in about 2". the whole front body and radiator. so will take the first and second car and make one. estimate the cost a $6,000. really too much for a wrecked 02 but I love the model. I have had an awful time trying to get any shop to fix the car. it has been sitting for six months or more. so this week I pulled both motors and will splice 2" of frame. next week I will send it to a shop that can reset the codes and maybe the following week the body work will start. looking forward to driving it again. my only other running Maserati is a Bora. very different.

Another 120 mile drive today, not an error light, or fluctuating oil pressure gauge in sight. Long may it continue.

Like Allan went for a blast on Sunday along with a mate in his late model, manual 4200. Swopped cars, he in the AC, me in the 4200, and both ended the day with big grins on our faces. Both love our own cars but also amazed by the other and the fact they are just soooo different ... Completely different cars with different characters. Superb, and agree pound for pound there's nothing can match 'em !! (Also, I'm sure as we parted company I heard him muttering about wanting bonnet vents and boomerangs...!)

Hate to point this out but the ebay auction is now up to £7k with 2 days to run, not bad considering the ad. I wouldn't auction mine but if you want a quick sale its a good way to go.

3200 versus 4200,lets see how much it makes....personally I know which car I'd spend my hard earned cash on
