A basic test should be just that, an authorisation to drive a car of up to 1600cc, similar to the bike test system. An intermediate course takes that up to 2500cc and an advanced course beyond that. Most dimwits would be happy with an Aygo or some such town car and only keener and more capable drivers would be capable of attaining something more sporty. Motorway driving would have a dedicated test to assess suitability. Roads would become a lot safer and motorways would be a lot less crowded.

I agree completely, I drive circa 50k a year and every day I see driving getting worse and worse. Lane control on motorways is something else, roundabouts and junctions, and people's manners are awful. I try and let everyone I can out of a junction but do you think this gets returned?! Don't get me started.....

A part of the test, should be learning how to respect others.......actually this should be part of parenting and school curriculums...the rest then follows

Throw in winter driving and ice / wet handling then you have the makings of a test which equips people to drive safely and sensibly. Which would be nice.

God knows I need all the tuition I can get!

Iam not to sure a piece of paper that's says you passd a certain level of test will change anything , people will drive how there see fit at the time what ever there level and if we are ornest with each other we all at some point may have driven beond the limits of the law and we would probably class our selfs as good drivers of very powerfull cars . Do you think that if you had passed a advanced driving test that would be any differant thats why we own these cars or maybe we should of all bought far more comfy, reliable, economical , better equipped safey cars with cup holders . The fact someone may have a advance driving may give them a false sense of ability as often or not it's a third party that causes a accident .I think it's down to exsperance and age and unfortunately that only comes with time on the roads but I do believe restricting engine size in relation to years driving may reduce accidents but you can still kill your self or others in a 1.0 ltr car .

I see the logic, I just don't think as a mechanism it'll work. Most accidents are not caused by idiots driving jags or Beemers, it's caused by people who simply do not know how to drive safely / sensibly / with respect for others. Here's a case I think we can all associate with. Country road. Dry, good visibility. 40 mph. Into a 30 zone: 40 mph. Round a raound about: turn right from the left hand lane without indicating.

I could go on :)

Still in hospital with no broken bones but severe bruising and possible spinal injury.

Incredible.

I went on a mission to find out the car type and discovered quite a lot about the accident. The guy involved was a folk/rock drummer with a band called The Dolmen. Amusingly, their facebook page is sponsored by the Hyundai i40 Tourer which is the car they were in!

Good one Outrun..........just I always say.....the orientals don't sell cars they sell automotive white goods.............

Good work Outrun, nobody had that on their list! When Hyundai started out their motors were old BL cast offs the original Accent was essentially a Marina I know I had the pick up truck and loaded it used to wheelie and everything was behind the rear wheels! I think these days they are their own designs but the images of the accident are truly shocking, the extent of the destruction...

So could I. The basic requirement of a driver is being able to control a car and being able to think ahead and, IMO, the current test does not examine those facets anywhere near thoroughly enough. These days it seems you learn how to pass a test but not how to drive.

Very true indeed Ian; sadly true of our education system that the kids are only taught how to pass exams to make the school look better, screw the economy and manufacturing!

I'll drink to that. There is the additional issue that very few people continue their training after the test. So I see Mrs Catman make the same mistakes over and again. She's been making them for 20+ years now. She doesn't *know* they're mistakes as no one has sat and explained why you should do this, and not that. Right up until something goes wrong, of course.....
