Wobbly wheels

I must admit to being a bit anal about wheel balance, even the slightest shimmy gives me the hump.

When the car is parked in the man cave after a blast the tyres are hot and as a result if the car is left to stand for a week or more the tyres will develop flat spots which disappear again after driven on for a few miles. Only then can you tell if it's wheel wobble or flat spot vibration. anyway.............

I spoke to a wheel wobble expert and he told me that in most Tyre Bays that have high turnover they set the balancer to a tolerance that allows a speedy balance ie '0' '0' comes up quite quickly so they can cope with turnover. To me that sounds like my delicate 10" & 8.5" rims could be in perfect balance or not to the tune of 5 - 15 Grammes maybe.

I don't know about anyone else but often after a balance I drive away thinking I can still feel a little shimmy. The pat response is ' the hub might be out of balance' or ' the wheel might be buckled' etc etc. Stuff this I thought so I got myself the bees knees of track day balancers. The Hoffmann pic att.

What a difference, my wheels now feel like perfectly round items on each corner for the first time ever and it's great to do your own as often as you like, almost therapeutic especially when you can balance to one gramme acuracy. Best thing I've done for a long time, Yeh yeh I know I should get out more but if anyone wants their wheels to feel round again come down to my place and do them yourself. I've even got Hoffman slimline racing weights, how cool is that? Maybe a group day out in Dorset??

I salute you sir ! That really is taking your driving pleasure seriously. Can I ask a delicate question ? What does a Hoffmann set you back these days ?

I was very lucky as they had a demo for sale at £1200 inc vat and we settled on £950 with a full 2 year on site warranty. they have others similar but brand spanking new they are about £1800 inc vat and full on site warranty.

But, and it is a big but, Hoffman always fetch a premium price on the second hand market as they are so good (German) and they last for ever according to the people I spoke to in the trade.

Cheap Chinese copies on the interweb are not worth the effort of buying as they are using 20 year old technology and Chinese bearings Aghhhhhhhh.

Thats dedication. I guess you'll get your money back if you wanted to sell them as even after a few years they'll still be in a as new condition. Do you remove that sticky gunk that garages always seem to leave on from the preious set of weights? That must be a few grams at least!

Ah, I'm glad you asked because here is the link to the 'Tex Eraser wheel' which you fit into any drill and just rest it on the black residue of the old weight adhesive strip and it comes off as if by majic with absolutely no damage to the wheel. The eraser is made of a special hard rubber and lasts quite a long time.

The Tex brand is the best but there are others on ebay at around £5 that work just as well but don't last as long.

Ive used that and can highly recommend it , great for getting number plate sticky back plastic off

My problem is losing weights , must have lost half a dozen in the last few years , i think its a combination of Jet washing and driving too fast .....possibly

I had my wheels refurbed last year and they completely cocked up the balancing. I too the fronts in to be done and they put something redicuous like 300g on each wheel! Seriously.

Poorly balanced wheels are a pain in the back side! Good work for getting one bought.

Seems amazing that main dealers sell second hand cars for big £££ and leave that gunk inside the wheel arches. I guess they can't be bothered rebalancing.
